MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior libero Maddie Correa surpassed 900 career digs, but the Texas Tech Red Raiders fell to the Kansas State Wildcats, 23-25, 14-25, 20-25, on Saturday afternoon at Morgan Family Arena.
Correa posted her 17th double-digit dig performance of the year for the Red Raiders (10-18, 3-13 Big 12) after totaling 14 in the match to reach 906 career digs. Both Caitlin Dugan and Brynn Williams led Tech with seven kills apiece against K-State (16-10, 10-7 Big 12).
Freshman Reagan Engler led the Red Raiders in hitting percentage and blocks as she recorded five kills on 11 attacks (.455) and four blocks. In the back row, Williams and Rhodes were second on the team with eight digs each, while Rhodes added three blocks and 21 assists.
The Red Raiders went ahead 4-2 in the beginning of set one after blocks from Emily Merrick and Engler and errors on the Wildcats. K-State then went on a 4-0 run for the 6-4 advantage. However, Tech answered with a 7-0 run of its own thanks to an ace from Courtney O'Brien, blocks from Williams, Engler and Rhodes and kills from Engler and Williams. The Red Raiders took an 18-12 lead on another Williams slam, but the Wildcats responded with six-straight points to tie it at 18-18. The two teams tied once again at 21-all, before K-State won four of the next six points to claim set one by a close score of 25-23.
The start of set two went back-and-forth as both teams tied eight times to get to 8-all. During that span, Rhodes picked up an ace, Madison Gilliland and Williams put down kills and both Engler and Merrick had a block. However, the Wildcats would go on an 11-0 run to take an 18-8 lead before a kill by Dugan and a block from Gilliand and Rhodes stopped it. K-State held on to the lead, though, as they won the second set, 25-14.
The Red Raiders got off to a hot start, going on a 7-2 run to open the third set and forcing a Wildcat timeout thanks to kills by Merrick and Williams and some errors on K-State. The Wildcats chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the set at 12-12 to force a Texas Tech timeout. K-State followed with a 6-2 run for the 18-14 advantage. Tech won six more points in the set, but the Wildcats would keep the lead and take it, 25-20.
