The Kansas City Chiefs star became the ninth quarterback in league history to earn NFL MVP honors twice in a career
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech great Patrick Mahomes II claimed the NFL's highest athletic award for a second time in his still young career Thursday night as he was tabbed the league's MVP during the annual NFL Honors show on NBC.
Mahomes collected 48 of 50 first-place votes to run away with the MVP award, easily topping Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. The Chiefs star is now one of 10 players all-time in NFL history to garner MVP honors at least twice in a career as he previously was recognized in 2018 following his first full year leading the Kansas City offense.
Of that group, Mahomes is the ninth quarterback to earn MVP honors twice, joining a prestigious list consisting of Johnny Unitas (1959, 1964, 1967), Joe Montana (1989-90), Steve Young (1992, 1994), Brett Farve (1995-97), Kurt Warner (1999, 2001), Peyton Manning (2003-04, 2008, 2009, 2013), tom Brady (2007, 2010, 2017) and Aaron Rodgers (2011, 2014, 2020-21). MVP honors are determined annually in a vote of Associated Press members who cover the league.
"To the Chiefs organization, Clark Hunt, Brett Veach, Andy Reid, the staff and most of all, my teammates, I would never be standing here today without y'all," Mahomes said in a pre-taped speech. "Every day giving everything that we have together to go for the ultimate goal, the Super Bowl. Let's continue to go for that dream this weekend."
Mahomes, 27, has the Chiefs back in the Super Bowl for the third time in his five years now as a starter as he became the youngest quarterback in league history to record multiple seasons with 5,000 passing yards. Mahomes led the Chiefs to another dominant run to the AFC crown after throwing for 5,250 yards and 41 touchdowns, while also rushing for 358 and four more scores during the regular season alone.
Most notably, Mahomes set the NFL single-season record for most total yards by a quarterback, snapping the previous mark of 5,614 total yards that was set by Drew Brees. Mahomes' 5,250 passing yards marked his most in his NFL career as the Chiefs were the league's statistical leader in both total yards and passing yards per game. Mahomes, himself, led the NFL in passing yards, touchdown passes and total QBR (77.5).
His heroics didn't stop in the regular season as Mahomes led the Chiefs back to the Super Bowl following playoff wins over the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Cincinnati Bengals. Mahomes displayed the same toughest that defined his career back as a Red Raider, overcoming an ankle injury against the Jaguars to put together a gutsy performance versus the Bengals.
The victory was Mahomes' 10th already in his young NFL career, making him the youngest quarterback in NFL history to reach that mark, according to ESPN Stats & Info. The win also helped push Mahomes, at only 27 years old, past Tom Brady as the youngest quarterback in history to reach three Super Bowls.
Mahomes is one of two Red Raiders set for Sunday's Super Bowl as he will face Zech McPhearson, an All-Big 12 first team defensive back during his two seasons from 2019-20. McPhearson is in his second full seasons with the Eagles after being selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Super Bowl LVII is slated for a 5:30 p.m. kick Feb. 12 from State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The game will be covered nationally via FOX.
