No. 14 Tech drops series opener at Texas
March 24, 2023 | Baseball
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 14 Texas Tech dropped game one of its three-game series to rival Texas 6-2 on Friday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Red Raiders led 2-1 after the top half of the sixth, but the Longhorns answered the next half-inning with two runs and tacked on insurance down the stretch.
Three of the Red Raiders' five losses this season have come when scoring two runs or less – each of those was away from the friendly confines of Rip Griffin Park.
Texas Tech (18-5, 2-2) got a strong start from Brendan Girton on the mound. The redshirt sophomore gave the Red Raiders 5 1/3 innings and was charged with two runs. He issued one walk and punched out one while five hits were scattered.
One of Girton's two earned runs was a baserunner left on second that Ryan Free inherited in the bottom of the sixth as Texas began to mount its comeback. Free entered for his team-leading 10th appearance, after a one-out double, and surrendered his first home run since opening weekend to the first Horns' batter he faced.
Free was charged with the loss, despite pitching effectively going forward as he retired five straight following the home run.
The Texas lead swelled to 6-2 in the eighth with Kyle Robinson on the hill for the Red Raiders. A pair of leadoff walks started the rally; a two-run double followed by a sacrifice fly scored the third run of the frame. He was lifted for Brendan Lysik to close the inning for the final out. Three runs were scored on one hit.
Texas Tech's first run-scoring opportunity came in the fourth. The Red Raiders had their first runner in scoring position and would proceed to load the bases. Kevin Bazzell led off the inning with the first of his team-leading two hits on the night. A pair of walks loaded the bases, but they were left that way as Longhorn starter Lucas Gordon struck out his sixth and seventh batters of the game. He finished the game with eight punchouts.
The Longhorns capitalized during the next half-inning by manufacturing the game's first run. Alike the Red Raiders, Texas registered a leadoff single but unlike the Red Raiders, they pushed the baserunner home using a sac fly to score the game's first run.
Texas Tech tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the fifth and took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a Gavin Kash solo home run. It was the first home run allowed by Gordon this season as Kash upped his team-leading home run total to eight.
