STANFORD, Calif. – In a rare Monday evening matchup, No. 21 Texas Tech fell 6-4 in its Top 25 showdown versus No. 8 Stanford on Monday evening at Sunken Diamond. The Red Raiders got off to a hot start scoring four in the second inning but cooled with the evening as the home team marched on to score six unanswered runs.
The Red Raiders out-hit the Cardinal, 8-5, in the contest. Gage Harrelson, Gavin Kash and Hudson White each had a pair of hits. But in hand with the run production, six of Tech's eight hits were produced early, over the first three innings.
Every member of the Texas Tech lineup was sent to the plate in its four-run second inning. Four Red Raiders recorded hits, two of which were run-producing two-out hits as Will Burns knocked an RBI single while Harrelson knocked in two runs with his 13th double of the season. Kash smashed a leadoff single on a payoff pitch to start the rally. Zac Vooletich took a four-pitch walk and would manufacture that into a run for the Red Raiders. White was the culprit that knocked in the first run of the game, scoring Kash with an RBI single.
Four of Stanford's six runs came via the home run ball. They picked up three quick ones the next half inning following the Red Raiders' outburst to cut the deficit to one, 4-3.
Stanford cashed in on the Red Raiders' free passes issued to aid its three-run bottom of the second. A one-out hit-by-pitch gave the Cardinal its first baserunner of the game. A two-out walk put two onboard without a hit which was followed by Stanford's first hit, a big one, as Stanford left fielder Cole Hinkelman cut the deficit to one with a three-run home run.
Stanford produced three single-run innings the rest of the way. The home team tied the game, 4-4, in the fourth. Took the lead, 5-4, in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth.
Freshman Jacob Rogers got the starting nod for the Red Raiders, the second of his young career. He was lifted after 2 2/3 innings in favor of Andrew Devine. The California native, Devine, inherited a bases-loaded jam in the third and produced the out Tech needed to keep Stanford off the scoreboard and retain Tech's 4-3 lead.
Devine's one-out walk in the fourth turned into the game-tying run. A double pushed the baserunner to third base and a sacrifice fly scored the run. In the fifth, a leadoff home run gave Stanford the lead and signaled the end of Devine's outing.
Ethan Coombes had a clean slate in the fifth, entering the game after the home run. Coombes worked a scoreless fifth but allowed a leadoff double in the sixth that turned into the Cardinal insurance run to push their lead to 6-5. It was the only hit allowed in his 1 1/3 inning appearance. Derek Bridges and Dax Dathe closed the final 2 2/3. The duo combined to allow zero runs or hits.
The Red Raiders' first two hurlers were unable to produce a strikeout while the final three combined to punch out five. While all four earned runs were charged to Stanford's starter Nick Dugan, he also struck out six over the first three innings. It was six of Stanford's 14 strikeouts as a staff on Monday. The 14 strikeouts marked the most by the Red Raider hitters this season when excluding their 16-inning game versus Texas A&M.
Tech was 3-for-9 hitting with runners in scoring position while the Cardinal was 1-for-7. Tech was also 6-for-15 hitting with two outs compared to Stanford hitting 2-for-11 with two outs.
