No. 3 MGOLF heads to Thunderbird Collegiate

The event will serve as the final tune-up before Big 12 Championships
PHOENIX -- The No. 3 ranked Texas Tech men's golf program heads west this weekend for the Thunderbird Collegiate hosted by No. 5 Arizona State Friday and Saturday at the Papago Golf Club.

The event begins with 36 holes on Monday and concludes with the final 18 holes on Saturday afternoon. Tech tees off from hole 10 Friday morning between 9:06 a.m. (CT) and 9:30 a.m. (CT).

This weekend's field includes three top-five teams in No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Tech and No. 5 ASU, as well as six top-25 teams.

Powered by four birdies in his final six holes senior Ludvig Aberg finished tied for fourth at the Calusa Cup hosted by the University of Iowa at Calusa Pines Golf Club.

After sitting at +2 for the day after 12 holes, Aberg caught fire, birding the par five 13th, par four 15th, par four 17th and par five 18 to record a two-under round of 70.Â

As a team, No. 2 Texas Tech finished tied for fifth with the University of Georgia at +21. With the top-five finish, Tech has now finished inside the top-five at all eight events this season.

No. 3 North Carolina took home a 10-shot lead after finishing at -4. The Tar Heels were 10 shots clear of in-state rival Wake Forest who finished second at +6.

No. 5 Arizona State took home third place after going +7 for the week, while No. 1 Vanderbilt finished at +17 to earn fourth.

Ohio State (+24), Purdue (+37) and Iowa (+50) rounded out the nine-team event.

UNC's Ryan Burnett fired an even-par 72 to win by two strokes. William Moll of Vandy and Michael Brennan fired identical rounds of 69 (-3) to finish tied for second. Aberg and two others finished at -1, as just seven players finished under par for the week.Â

The Red Raiders set their sights on securing the Big 12 Championship next week when they travel to the Big 12 Men's Golf Championships hosted by the Prairie Dunes Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
