April 14, 2023 | Men's Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. – Fifth-year senior Franco Ribero tallied his first ranked singles win of the year as the No. 33 Texas Tech Red Raiders swept the No. 44 Oklahoma State Cowboys, 4-0, on Friday night at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (13-9, 1-3 Big 12) began the night with a solid outing in doubles versus Oklahoma State (12-11, 0-4 Big 12). Tech got its first win at court two when Piotr Pawlak and Ribero easily won their match against Alex Garcia and Francisco Pini. Both pairs started back-and-forth, tying the set at 3-3, before Pawlak and Ribero pulled away by winning the next three games to claim the match, 6-3.
It would be Dimitrios Azoidis and Reed Collier at the top court to clinch Tech's 13th doubles point of the year. The Red Raider tandem traded games with Isaac Becroft and Chase Ferguson until it was tied at 5-all. Then, Azoidis and Collier won the next two games for a 7-5 score to clinch the point. When play was halted, the pairing of Isaac Arevalo and Olle Wallin were tied 5-5 on court three with Alessio Basile and Tyler Zink.
The Red Raiders needed just three singles wins to clinch the match and they got them pretty quickly… In fact, it only took an hour and a half to win those three matches.
At court two, Ribero recorded his second win of the night as he dominated No. 78 Becroft. Ribero would win the first three games of set one for a 3-0 lead before giving up a game. However, that was the only game he lost as he won the remaining ones to claim the set by a 6-1 score. In set two, the Red Raider went up a break before Becroft cut into his lead at 4-2. Ribero kept up the momentum as he won it, 6-2, and gave Tech its second point. This win also gave Ribero his first ranked singles victory of the season.
Collier joined Ribero in winning his second match against the Cowboys after taking down Ferguson at court four. The two battled back-and-forth in the first set as Collier took a 4-3 lead. Then, the Red Raider went on a roll as he won the next two games to claim set one, 6-3. Going down 0-2 in the following set, Collier put his foot on the gas as he won four-consecutive games to lead, 4-2. Ferguson tacked on two more games, but Collier remained in control as he won, 6-3, 6-4, to collect his 50th career singles victory.
For the first time this season, Azoidis would clinch the match for Tech after defeating Basile at court six in straight sets. Azoidis and Basile kept it close in the first set as the Red Raider led 4-3, before winning two of the next three games to take it 6-4. Azoidis began set two with a 4-1 advantage, but the Cowboy came back to tie it up at 5-5. The Cyprus native would fight back, holding and breaking serve to win his match, 6-4, 7-5, to clinch the Red Raiders' first conference win of the season.
When the match was finished, both Olle Wallin and Isaac Arevalo had just forced a third set against their opponents, while freshman Lorenzo Esquici was one game away from winning his match.
Wallin was facing No. 99 Zink at court one. He fell in the first set, 6-2, before coming back to win the next set by a 6-4 score. Over at court three, Arevalo dropped set one to Garcia, 7-5, but took a commanding lead in the second set to win it with a 6-1 score. Esquici was taking on Pini at court five as he was leading 6-2, 5-4 when the match concluded.
Up next, the Red Raiders close out their regular season against the No. 34 Oklahoma Sooners with a match on Sunday, April 16 at 1 p.m.
