April 21, 2023 | Men's Tennis
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Despite winning the doubles point and junior Olle Wallin tallying his ninth ranked singles win, the No. 31 Texas Tech Red Raiders dropped their quarterfinal match in the Big 12 Tournament to the No. 47 Oklahoma State Cowboys, 4-3, on Friday morning at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
Grabbing their 15th doubles point of the season, Texas Tech (14-10) would take a 1-0 lead over Oklahoma State (13-12) after claiming two doubles wins. At the top court, Dimitrios Azoidis and Reed Collier put up a fight against No. 79 Chase Ferguson and Tyler Zink, but would fall in the match, 6-3.
Piotr Pawlak and Franco Ribero came back to even things up at court two when they defeated Isaac Becroft and Alex Garcia by a 6-4 score, pushing their total to a team-best 14 dual wins on the season. Isaac Arevalo and Wallin clinched the doubles point at court three when they picked up a 6-3 victory over Alessio Basile and Carl Roothman.
In singles, the Cowboys evened things at 1-all when they recorded a win at court three. But, No. 47-ranked Wallin gave the Red Raiders back the lead as he collected his ninth ranked win of the year with a straight-set win against No. 107 Zink at the top of the lineup, 6-4, 6-4.
Once again, Oklahoma State tied it up after getting a victory at court two. Next, at court four, Collier was in a battle with Ferguson. The Red Raider won the first set, 6-3, before going down 1-4 in set two. Collier would then fight back to win six of the next seven games to beat Ferguson, 6-3, 7-5, to give Tech the 3-2 advantage.
After picking up a singles win on court five for OSU, the match would come down to court six where Azoidis and Roothman were in a tough match. Azoidis dominated the first set when he won it, 6-2. However, the Cowboy forced a third set after winning set two by a 6-4 score. Going down 3-0 in the third, Azoidis fought back to make it 4-4, but dropped the next two games as Oklahoma State clinched the match to advance in the tournament.
The Red Raiders will now await the NCAA Tournament as the selection show will be held on May 1.
