Tan and Zaretsky pace Tech on Day One at Grayhawk

The freshmen were a combined -6 on the day
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Powered by a bogey-free 68 from Shannon Tan and a strong round of 70 from her classmate Lauren Zaretsky, the Texas Tech women's golf program sits tied for 11th after Day One of the NCAA Championships hosted by Grayhawk Golf Club and Arizona State University.
Continuing her strong play toward the conclusion of the season, Tan was extremely consistent on Friday morning, using a pair of birdies on both the back and front nine to fire her fourth consecutive round of below-par golf.
Tan has now shot a combined -17 under in her four rounds this NCAA Tournament.
The other true freshman in the Tech lineup was also really good on Friday, as Zaretsky closed with three birdies in her final six holes to card an opening round 70.
Tan sits tied for third after the opening round, while Zaretsky is tied for 10th overall.
No. 2 Wake Forrest shot of the round of the day, using five scores of par or better to sit at -9 after 18 holes. The Demon Deacons are one shot ahead of Oklahoma State, and Big 12 individual medalist Maddison Hinson-Tolchard.
Hinson-Tolchard used seven birdies and just one bogey to fire an opening round 66 (-6). She lead Lauren Walsh of Wake by one shot, and quartet that features Tan by two shots for the individual lead.
In total, just six of the 30 schools finished under par on Friday, highlighted by the performances from Wake Forest and OSU.
Georgia and South Carolina each finished the day -2 to share third, while New Mexico and No. 6 Teas A&M end Day One tied for fifth at -1.
No. 1 Stanford, No. 10 Florida State and No. 22 Duke are all tied for seventh at even par, with Baylor just one shot back at (+1).
Tech is tied with No. 20 SMU for 11th, one shot clear of No. 11 Texas, No. 8 San Jose State and No. 23 Arizona who sit tied for 13th.
Michigan State and TCU are tied for 16th at +5, with No. 3 LSU (+6) and No. 16 Pepperdine (+7) closing out the top-20.
Augusta and No. 9 USC are tied for 20th at +8, with Oregon State (+9), Virginia (+10), No. 19 Clemson (+11) and No. 18 Ole Miss (+12) rounding out the top-25.
No. 5 Mississippi State (+13) and Tulsa (+13) are tied for 26th with Northwestern (+15), No. 17 Vanderbilt (+17) and NC State (+17) rounding out the 30-team field.
In the end, just 21 of the 158 players at this week championships ended the day under par.

After opening the week with a morning round, Tech will now tee off during the afternoon for Saturday's second crucial second round. The Red Raiders will once again be paired with Georgia (-2) and Michigan State (+5) for the second round and will tee off between 2:25 p.m. (CT) and 3:09 p.m. (CT).
