ORLANDO, Fla. – Junior Olle Wallin's impressive season has come to an end after dropping his Round of 64 match in the NCAA Singles Championships to Columbia's Michael Zheng, 6-2, 6-0, on Monday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
No. 36 Zheng opened the first set on serve, but Wallin would break it and take the 1-0 lead. The Lion then answered back by breaking No. 48 Wallin's serve to tie things at 1-1. Both players would hold serve to even the score at 2-all before Zheng went on to win four-consecutive games to take set one, 6-2. The Lion didn't let up in the following set as he claimed it, 6-0, to advance in the tournament.
The Halmstad, Sweden native will end his season as the first Tech player to earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Singles Championships in six years. Wallin finishes second on the team with 15 overall singles wins and second with 13 dual singles victories, with all 13 of those coming at the top of the lineup.
He was also named the Big 12 Player of the Week back in March, making it the first weekly conference award the Red Raiders won in two years. Wallin closes out the year with a team-high nine ranked singles wins, including two coming against conference opponents, giving him All-Big 12 First Team honors.
