Summer workouts begin for Tech basketball

LUBBOCK, Texas – "We're going to win a lot of games if we start doing that every time."
Grant McCasland stopped in his tracks from delivering corrective instructions for that message on the second day of summer workouts. It was something small, away from where his original thought was being directed. The player, acknowledging a teammate and taking ownership, was instinctual with his actions. Showing unselfishness. Building camaraderie.
"The main thing was getting everybody together and getting used to our teammates and coaches," Texas Tech sophomore Robert Jennings said. "We're building relationships and getting ready for the season. It's a big season ahead and gelling is the biggest thing right now."
The Red Raiders are in their first week on the court together for the summer that begins the McCasland era. He was named the 19th head coach in program history on the last day of March and is now tasked with developing the 99th roster in program history. Below are thoughts from McCasland and players as the summer workouts began.
McCasland: "Anytime you can get in the gym as a team, you're winning. For us, it's about familiarity with each other and getting the physical foundation for what we want to do every day. We aren't in great shape, but summer is about skill development and trying to make sure our bodies are right for the Big 12 schedule."
KyeRon Lindsay: "We wanted to get everyone together and blend well and start working out with the coaches. We need to build the team chemistry before the season starts so we're ready for when the time comes to play."
Darrion Williams: "It's real fun out here. We are starting to gel as a team by hanging around each other the last week or so. Getting ready for the year."
Lamar Washington: "We're all supporting each other. There's no bad vibes or energy. Everyone just loves each other."
Chance McMillian: "I like how we are off the court. We're coming together and that will help us on the court. We constantly hang out together outside the gym. That's a real good thing."
McCasland: "You want to have great energy every day. You're establishing the competitiveness and energy that is required to win championships. You have to do it every day. The first day is the fun day where everyone is excited, but the longer you play the more difficult things get. The same energy is required. I'm thrilled with the effort and love this team. They have great competitiveness and love each other. Any time you come out here trying to get the best out of each other I think you're going to reach a ceiling that doesn't even exist. Our guys can always get better. You have to play with energy to get better and today we had it."
