DALLAS – The Texas Tech Red Raiders were defeated by the LSU Tigers on the second day of the SMU Invitational in three sets, 19-25, 16-25, 17-25, this Saturday afternoon at the Moody Coliseum.
Graduate Caitlin Dugan was the lone Red Raider to eclipse double-digit kills after posting 10 for Tech (6-5). Both Kate Hansen and Emily Merrick hit .333 on the day with three kills on six swings. Reagan Engler and Brynn Williams led the team with two blocks apiece, while Williams added a team-best 11 digs against the Tigers (5-4).
The Red Raiders started the first set out strong after taking a commanding 5-2 lead on a block from Williams and Engler. Going up 8-5 on an LSU error, the Tigers turned it around and won five straight points to take the lead, 10-8. Tech got within three on a kill by Williams, 15-12, but the Tigers held off the Red Raiders for the remainder of the set to win it, 25-19.
The first few points of set two went back-and-forth as both teams tied three times in that short span. However, LSU broke away for the 7-3 advantage on a Tech attack error. The Scarlet and Black chipped away to make it 10-7 on a Katelyn Cochran ace, but LSU kept extending its lead, 19-10, on a kill by Anita Anwusi. Tech answered with a 5-1 run thanks to kills from Dugan and errors by the Tigers to make it 20-15, but LSU only allowed the Red Raiders to win one more point as the Tigers won the second set, 25-16.
Tech and LSU traded points to begin the third set until the Red Raiders took a 5-4 lead on a Dugan kill. LSU would win seven of the next nine points for the 11-7 advantage before a kill from Hansen stopped it, sparking a 4-1 run for Tech. A slam from Engler cut into the Tiger lead at 16-14, but LSU claimed the next five points for the 22-15 advantage before going on to sweep the Red Raiders, 25-17.
