Ambroziak leads, Fleming second at Red Raider Invite

The freshman (Ambroziak) fired a two-round score of -6, while Fleming followed at -4
LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech women's golf program finished Day One of the Red Raider Invitational (-12) in first, ending the day with a 17-shot lead over second place Iowa (+5) after two rounds of the Red Raider Invitational hosted by Tech and The Rawls Course, Monday.

Freshman Maja Ambroziak and junior Libby Fleming led the way for Tech, finishing -6 and -4 on the day to sit in first and second place respectively after 36 holes of the Red Raider Invitational.

Ambroziak started out hot in round one with three birdies on the front nine followed up with a birdie on her final hole. She would finish the first 18 at -1, which was good for a  top-15 standing.

The freshman would pick up right where she left off in round two, again firing three birdies on the front nine. She would go on to fire three birdie to finish round with a two-round score of 138 (-6).

Fleming would also start round one on fire, birdying three of her first six holes. She would go on to finish round one with three more birdies to end the first round also at -1 after a 71.

Like Ambroziak, Fleming got stronger as the day wore on, shooting a 69 in round two. After bogeying her second hole, Fleming got back on track and fired three birdies in the next seven, finishing the day in second place overall at -4.

Freshman Klara Hurtova, who's playing as an individual this tournament, started strong as well with two birdies in the first two holes. Hurtova would go on to finish the day -2 and tied for fifth.

Sophomore Lauren Zaretsky got hot late and using five second round birdies, to finish the day at -1, tied for seventh.

Senior Gala Dumez started round one slow with three bogeys on the front nine of round one, but would turn the heat up when round two started. Dumez birdied three of her first seven holes and would go on to finish the day even-par and tied for 11th.

After two of three rounds, Tech has four girls within the top-10, as all eight Red Raiders ended the day inside the top-40.

The Hawkeyes of Iowa used a combined team score of 581 (+5) to sit in second, six shots clear of Campbell (+11). ACU is three shots behind the Camels at +14, followed by UTEP (+15), Oklahoma City U (+22) and HCU (+24) round out the top seven.

New Big 12 foe Cincinnati (+26) and Princeton (+26) are tied for eighth, with UTRGV (+36) rounding out the 10-team field.

Ambroziak enters tomorrow's third and final round of the Red Raider Invitational with a two-shot lead over Fleming and UIWs Ellen Nicholas who is playing the week as the individual.

Hurtova and Oklahoma City U's Maddi Kamas sit three shots back at -3. Kamas provided one of the highlights of the day, as the Oklahoma native used eight birdies and just one bogey to tie the women's course record with a 65.
