No. 17 MGOLF ready for Sahalee Championship

The 12-team field includes three top-10 teams and 10 top-25 squads
SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- No. 17 Texas Tech men's golf heads to Washington for the season opening Sahalee Players Championship (SPC) hosted by the University of Washington, beginning Saturday. Tech starts the season ranked number 17 after a third-place finish at the Big 12 Championship and a third-straight NCAA Championship appearance.
The Red Raiders tee off for the opening round at 7:45 a.m. (PT). Saturday's second round will follow at 12:20 p.m. (PT) with the third and final round scheduled for Sunday morning.
This week's loaded twelve-team field includes three top-10 programs (Arizona State, Stanford, and Illinois) and 10 top 25 teams that are ranked in the GolfWeek Preseason rankings.
A unique feature of this year's SPC is the individual champion will receive a sponsor's exemption to the 2023 Fortinet Championship played on the PGA Tour the following week in Napa, California.
Looking to build off last year's NCAA Championship appearance, Tech is returning two 2023 PING All-Region selections in senior Tyran Snyders and junior Calum Scott. The Red Raiders will also get some help from North Texas transfer Vicente Marzilio. While at UNT, Marzilio was named to the First Team of the All-Conference USA three years in a row and was the former CUSA Freshman of the Year.
For the first two rounds of competition the Red Raiders will be paired with No. 2 Arizona State and No. 23 Duke. The Red Raiders will tee off between 10:15 a.m. and 11:35 a.m.

 RED RAIDER STORYLINES:
 THREE VETERANS TO RETURN: 
• Three veteran Red Raiders will return to the lineup this season as Calum Scott, Tyran Snyders, and Jack Wall will come back for the Red Raiders in 2023-24. The trio played in all 14 events last season for Tech. 
• A 2023 All-Big 12 selection, 2023 Walker Cup selection and US Amateur Participant, Calum Scott recorded three top-10 and six top-20 finishes. 
• Last season, Scott started the season shooting 63 at the Frederica Cup. He then followed up the opening round with rounds of 67 and 72 to finish seventh.
• Tech's second veteran returner, Snyders, was a 2022-23 PING All-Region Selection and participated in the 2023 Palmer Cup.
• In his first year with the Red Raiders, Snyders tallied three top-10 finishes and placed 19th at the 2023 Big 12 Championships.
• Snyders, now a senior, started his career at Memphis where he totaled seven top-20 finishes, three top-10's and two top-fives for the 2021-22 season. He was named to the All-AAC Team that year.
• The third veteran, Wall, is heading into his final year as a graduate assistant. Last year, Wall's first season with Tech after transferring from South Carolina, he was  the New Jersey Amateur Champion and the Genesis Intercollegiate Champion. 
• Last year, Wall started the season off hot with a pair of top-20 finishes at both the Frederica Cup and at Inverness. At The Frederica Cup, he used back-to-back rounds of 68 and 67 to finish 13th. 
• In the 2022-23 season, he recorded three top-20 finishes and ended the Big 12 Match Play event 3-2 after cruising to a 4 & 3 win over Oklahoma in the championship match.
WENT INTO THE PORTAL: 
• The lone transfer on the Red Raiders roster this season is senior Vicente Marzilio. Marzilio had a Texas Tech connection as he played a pair of seasons for new Tech associate head coach James Vargas. 
• A transfer from North Texas, Marzilio Played in all 11 tournaments for the Mean Green in 2022-23. He played as an individual in the NCAA Norman Regional while posting a team-best 72.08 scoring average.
• While at UNT, he was named a three-time First Team All-CUSA selection.
• Marzilio finished the year with seven top-25 finishes and 3rd at the Conference USA Championship with a 71-76-70-217.
• Marzilio is originally from Don Torcuato, Argentina where he had five wins over the span of 2018-19. Some included wins at Abierto Las Brisas de Chicureo in Chile and Campeonato Abierto del Litoral in Argentina in 2018.
PASSING THE TORCH:
• The Red Raiders will start the 2023-24 season without Ludvig Aberg for the first time since the 2018-19 season. The 2023 PGA TOUR U Winner, forwent his final year of eligibility back in May. 
• In his final season, Aberg swept all three National Player of the Year Awards (Ben Hogan, Fred Haskins and Jack Nicklaus) becoming just the seventh player all-time to accomplish the feat.
• As previously mentioned, Aberg was the inaugural PGA TOUR U winner, earning his full PGA TOUR card for the remainder of the 2023 season and the entire 2024 season
• Aberg notched his first win just 70 days after earning his full PGA TOUR card when he defeated Matthew Fitzpatrick in the Omega European Masters last Sunday. Heading into the tournament, Fitzpatrick was ranked eighth among PGA players in the world. A day after his first win, Aberg was selected to Team Europe for 44th Ryder Cup as a captain's pick. 
UP NEXT:
The Red Raiders return to action at the end of September when they travel over to Albuquerque, N.M. for the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. The event begins on Monday Sept. 25 with the first two rounds and concludes Tuesday Sept. 26.
