Men’s tennis opens season with doubleheader

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team will open their spring season with a doubleheader on Saturday, January 20th at the Lubbock Country Club. The Red Raiders will open against the Wichita State Shockers beginning at 1 p.m., then will face the New Mexico State Aggies starting at 7 p.m. On Sunday, January 21, the Red Raiders are back in action with a 4 p.m. match against the Abilene Christian Wildcats.
Tech had a productive fall season in 2023 with 23 singles wins and nine doubles wins. Senior Reed Collier led the team in wins during the tournament season earning eight in singles, including a ranked win against No. 110 Sebastien Collard (Michigan State), and seven wins in doubles.
Collier, with freshman doubles partner Jonas Gundacker, led the team in doubles with a 3-1 record while the pairing of Collier and junior Tyler Stewart upset the No. 9 duo of Pierre-Yves Bailly and Siem Woldeab (University of Texas). Another three Red Raiders captured ranked singles wins over the fall season as Lorenzo Esquici defeated No. 117 Liam Krall (SMU), Stewart overtook No. 78 Enzo Aquiard (Alabama) and Olle Wallin bested No. 45 Jonah Braswell (University of Texas).
The Red Raiders achieved a 14-11 record last season going 2-3 in the Big 12. For their effort, Tech was awarded an NCAA Tournament appearance in the Columbus Regional where they fell to No. 37 Louisville, 3-4. Over the 2022-2023 season, the team recorded notable wins over No. 24 Memphis and No. 24 Middle Tennessee, as well as conference wins over No. 34 Oklahoma and No. 44 Oklahoma State.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Wichita State comes into Saturday with a 1-2 record after a trio of contests in Tempe, Ariz. The Shockers beat Grand Canyon, 5-2, before dropping their next two against Northern Arizona, 0-4, and Arizona State, 0-4. Last season, first-year head coach Darragh Glavin led Wichita State to an 11-16 campaign that ended in the American Athletic Conference Tournament against Tulane and included a loss to the Red Raiders, 0-4. Wichita State returns five players and brings in three newcomers into the contest.
New Mexico State begins their spring season on Saturday. Long time coach Carlos Vargas continues his reign at New Mexico State with six players returning from the 2022-2023 season. The Aggies struggled last season going 3-18 and 1-4 in the Western Athletic Conference.
Abilene Christian comes to Lubbock holding an 0-2 record with a pair of losses to Big 12 opponents No. 25 Baylor, 1-6, and No. 3 Texas, 0-7. Under the leadership of head coach Juan Nuñez, the Wildcats return Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Dario Kent, and a trio of all-conference players from their 14-11 campaign last season. During the 2022-2023 season, ACU claimed second place in the WAC tournament in a loss to UT-Arlington.
