Collier earns ranked win; San Diego defeats Tech on Saturday

LOS ANGELES – Senior Reed Collier recorded his second ranked win of the year, but the Texas Tech Red Raiders lost a hard-fought match to the San Diego Toreros on Saturday afternoon, 4-1, at Marks Stadium in the first round of ITA Kickoff Weekend.
San Diego (1-0) came out hot against the Red Raiders (2-2), claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. At court two, the Red Raider duo of Piotr Pawlak and Sebastian Abboud gave San Diego's Iiro Vasa and Oliver Tarvet all they could handle as the Tech tandem led 5-4 before the match was called.
In singles, No. 114-ranked Collier picked up a huge win over No. 31 Vasa to tie the match at 1-all. Collier looked unstoppable, defeating Vasa in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-0, for his second overall ranked victory and first of the dual season. With this win, Collier remains undefeated to start the spring and has yet to lose a set.
The ranked matchup of No. 71 Olle Wallin and No. 8 Tarvet at the top court lived up to the hype. Wallin took a back-and-forth first set, winning 7-6 (3), but Tarvet responded in the second with a 6-2 score. Tarvet led 3-2 in the third set before San Diego clinched the match.
The Toreros led 3-1 after getting singles wins at courts five and six, but the Red Raiders' final three singles matches each forced third sets. Young resiliency was on full display, as freshmen Jonas Gundacker and Niksa Arsic refused to go away.
On court four, Arsic lost his first set, 6-2, but came up clutch in a second set tiebreaker, winning it by a 7-6 (5) score with the match on the line. Gundacker dropped his first set to Lambert Ruland, 6-4, but flipped the script when he evened his match with a 6-4 second set. The third set was all Ruland, though, as he defeated Gundacker 6-2, sealing the win for the Toreros.
Up next, Tech will face either No. 7 USC or SMU in tomorrow's consolation match beginning at 1 p.m. CT.
