LUBBOCK, Texas – After picking up a couple of ranked singles wins during ITA Kickoff Weekend, senior Reed Collier was named Big 12 Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
This is Collier's first time winning the weekly honor as the Seabrook, Texas native led the Red Raiders with two singles wins last weekend, while helping Tech claim the doubles point over the SMU Mustangs.
Against the San Diego Toreros, No. 114 Collier went out to an early 6-3 lead over No. 31-ranked Iiro Vasa before posting a bagel in the second set, 6-0, to earn the ranked victory at court two.
The following day, Collier and SMU's No. 88-ranked Adam Neff were locked in a battle at No. 2 singles. Collier took the first set with a 7-6 (5) tiebreaker, then Neff evened the match with a 6-3 second set. Collier was able to maintain his composure as the senior recorded his second ranked win of the week with a 6-3 third set. In his five matches so far this Spring, this is the only singles match that he has dropped a set.
In addition, Collier and teammate Jonas Gundacker were able to earn a doubles win at the top court over SMU's Neff and Trevor Svajda, 6-4, to aid the Red Raiders to the doubles point.
Collier leads the Red Raiders with 13 overall wins, a 5-0 dual record and three ranked victories in singles. He also leads Texas Tech with 10 overall wins and three dual wins in doubles, all at court one. In his career, Collier now totals 65 singles wins and 51 doubles victories.
Up next, the Red Raiders host the UTRGV Vaqueros in a doubleheader on Friday, February 9 at 12 and 5 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center.
