Red Raiders picked 7th in preseason poll
October 10, 2024 | Men's Basketball
LUBBOCK – Texas Tech has been picked seventh of 16 in the 2025 Big 12 Men's Basketball Preseason Poll which was announced on Thursday and reflects the votes of the league's head coaches.Â
Kansas was selected as the favorite in the Big 12 men's basketball preseason poll, marking the 20th time in 28 seasons the Jayhawks have sat atop the preseason poll. KU's Hunter Dickinson was voted as Preseason Player of the Year by the Conference's head coaches for the second consecutive year. Baylor's Jeremy Roach and K-State's Coleman Hawkins shared Preseason Co-Newcomer of the Year honors. The Bears' VJ Edgecombe was Preseason Freshman of the Year. The Jayhawks enter the season as the preseason favorite for the second consecutive year and were closely followed by Houston, who has ranked second in the preseason poll in both of its seasons in the Big 12. Iowa State, Baylor and Arizona rounded out the top five.
The Red Raiders finished tied for third in the Big 12 standings last season after being picked eighth in the preseason poll of a 14-team conference. Tech went 11-7 in Big 12 play last season to finish in the top 3 of the conference standings for the fifth time in the past seven seasons. The program won the 2019 Big 12 regular-season championship for its only title and best finish through 28 years in the conference.
Texas Tech will open Big 12 play against UCF at 1 p.m. on December 31 at United Supermarkets Arena to begin a 20-game conference schedule that concludes at Arizona State at 9:30 p.m. on March 8 in Tempe, Arizona. The Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship is set for March 11-15 at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
With the four new additions and a couple subtractions, each of the 16 men's basketball programs in the Big 12 will now play five conference opponents twice and the other 10 conference opponents once (home or away) for a total of 20 conference games – up from 18 which has been the standard since the 2011-12 season. The Red Raiders are slated to play home-and-away matchups next season against Arizona, Arizona State, Houston, Oklahoma State and TCU. The home-only opponents for Tech have Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, UCF and West Virginia coming to Lubbock, while the Red Raiders will travel to play at BYU, Cincinnati, Kansas, Kansas State and Utah. Â
