
Tech sits in sixth after first day of Jim West Challenge

SAN MARCOS, Texas – After the opening two rounds at the Jim West Challenge on Sunday, the Red Raiders sit in sixth place at Kissing Tree Golf Club. Junior Lauren Zaretsky led Texas Tech's performance, highlighted by a season-best single-round 5-under-par 67 in the first round.
In addition to her 67, Zaretsky carded a 2-over-par 74 in the second round, ending the day 3-under (141) to slot her in a tie for 12th among the 68 individuals in the field. After a shotgun start at hole seven, the junior knocked in three birdies on the front nine and finished strong with four birdies and an eagle on the back nine to wrap up round one. Zaretsky's standout first round included six birdies and an eagle which helped secure her season-low round.
Maja Ambroziak and Kylee Loewe claimed the second and third-best scores for the team. Ambroziak is tied for 19th after 36 holes while Loewe is tied for 23rd.
Ambroziak started round one with one birdie on the front nine after her shotgun start on hole four and followed with three birdies on the back nine, carding an even score of 72. In round two, Ambroziak bettered herself by one shot, finishing with a 1-under 71 using a steady effort in a round that included 15 pars. She bogeyed the second hole of round two and then carded pars on the next eight holes. Birdies on holes 14 and 15 put her under par and she followed with six pars to close out the day for her 71.
Loewe had a powerful start during round one after a shotgun start at hole five with an eagle and a birdie on the front nine. On the back nine, the senior wrapped up the round with three birdies to shoot a 2-under-par 70. In round two, Loewe finished with a 2-over 74. She was 3-over after the first 16 holes but was able to knock in her first birdie of round two on the second-to-last hole and par the final hole to finish with a 74.Â
The Red Raiders shot a 4-under-par 284 in the first round, which tied them for third. After carding a 2-over-par in the second round, Tech dropped to sixth place. Of the 12 teams in action, Texas Tech is one of seven teams under par after 36 holes (2-under-par 574).
On Monday, Texas Tech will continue the battle in the final round with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
