
Hawkins selected to Bob Cousy Award Watch List

LUBBOCK – Texas Tech senior Elijah Hawkins has been selected to the 2025 Bob Cousy Award Watch List following a season where he ranked second nationally with 7.5 assists per game along with averaging 9.5 points and 1.6 steals. Hawkins is on a list of 20 announced by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame which highlights the top point guard in Division I men's college basketball.
The Cousy Award is named after the Class of 1971 Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard.
The winners of the 2025 Cousy Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the four other members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Julius Erving (Small Forward), Karl Malone Award (Power Forward), and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center). Those preseason watch lists will be announced later this week.
Hawkins transferred to Texas Tech for his senior season having already produced 1,077 points, 588 assists, 169 steals and 10 double-doubles through 92 games in his career. A Washington, D.C. native, Hawkins was fourth nationally last season with 247 total assists at Minnesota where he also had six double-doubles as an All-Big 10 honorable mention selection. He scored a career-high 24 points against Ohio State and had a 17-assist performance against IU Indy in a non-conference win. For his career, Hawkins is 134-for-357 (37.5 percent) on 3-pointers and has made 265 free throws. He began his collegiate career with two seasons at Howard where he averaged 13 points per game as a freshman and sophomore. Last season, he had eight games with double-figure assists, including dishing out 15 assists and scoring 11 points in a win over Butler in the NIT and also having double-doubles against Nebraska (12p/11a), Maine (12p/10a), Northwestern (13p/10a) at home, Illinois (12a/10p) and at Northwestern (14p/10a).

Previous winners of the Bob Cousy Award include Tristen Newton, Connecticut (2024), Markquis Nowell, Kansas State (2023), Ayo Dosunmu, Illinois (2021), Ja Morant, Murray State (2019), Jalen Brunson, Villanova (2018), Trey Burke, Michigan (2013), Kendall Marshall, North Carolina (2012), Kemba Walker, Connecticut (2011), and Jameer Nelson, St. Joseph's (2004). The award is in its 22nd year highlighting the nation's top point guard.
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in each of the three rounds starting on Friday, November 1. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2025 Bob Cousy Award will be narrowed to 10, and then in late February, to just 5. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Cousy and the Hall of Fame's selection committees, where winners will be selected. The Selection Committees for the Bob Cousy Award is composed of top men's college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers.
