Robertson inks Aussie Amy Squires
November 15, 2024 | Women's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech women's golf head coach JoJo Robertson announced on Friday the addition of Amy Squires to her roster in conjunction with the 2024-25 National Signing period opening. She will join the Red Raiders as a freshman for its 2025-26 campaign.
"We are so excited to have Amy join our program and can't wait for her to be on campus next year," said Robertson. "Amy is a hard worker who I know will take advantage of our incredible facilities and resources at Texas Tech. She is a strong player and will bring a lot of experience to our team."
Squires, who was born in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, calls nearby Port Stephens home, is a member of the Concord Golf Club, a club that has hosted several championship tournaments including the Australian PGA, NSW Open, ANZ Championship and Australian Women's Open. She graduated from Tomaree High School, located in Salamander Bay, this past September.
Squires boasts a resume of having qualified for the NSW Open each of the past three years. Arguably her best showing over that span was in 2023, in a field of 76 players, 45 professionals and 31 amateurs, Squires made the cut and finished tied for 37th, on the Tuncurry course, at Forster Tuncurry Golf Club on the beautiful Barrington Coast of NSW.
Outside playing against the pros, the rising star was crowned the 2023 Australian All Schools Girls Stroke Champion. At the Palmer Lakes golf course on the Gold Coast, Squires posted rounds of 68 and 72 to clinch the National All Schools title by three strokes and was a key member of the all-conquering NSW squad that won the Team Championship. For her efforts, Squires was one of five girls selected to the Australian Schools Merit Team.
Squires also chalked up victories in three Jean Derrin events – the Pacific Dunes Bowl, Newcastle Hunter District Ladies Championship and Nelson Bay Ladies Classic – before winning the Jack Newton Fayde Matchplay at Magenta Shores.
Her 2023 season culminated in being one of 21 junior golfers celebrated at the Jack Newton Junior Golf (JNJG) Presentation Evening held at Concord Golf Club. She was awarded the "2023 Outstanding Achievement" for securing her first major victory at the Fayde Junior Matchplay, in addition to winning the individual stroke play section at the National All-School Golf Championships.
In 2024, she was selected for the NSW Junior Interstate team. A selection for the state senior team, too. Squires ran away with the 2024 North Coast Junior Masters at Forster-Tuncurry Golf Club this past September, clearing her win by six strokes of the second-place finisher by shooting a 71 and a 72. Squires took the outright lead on the third hole of the second round and never looked back. The 17-year-old's length off the tee was a huge advantage, making birdie on three of the five par-5s on her way to the only under-par round of the tournament, boy or girl, on the difficult Tuncurry layout. It secured her position in the 2024 Bonville Champions Trophy event, which will take place on Dec. 3-5.
She is part of the golf NSW Targeted Athlete program and captains its pennants Team in the Sydney Metropolitan Senior Pennant for Concord Golf Club.
