Tech Softball to open season in Tallahassee
February 07, 2024 | Softball
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech softball team will open its 2024 campaign in Tallahassee, Fla. as they take part in the JoAnne Graf Classic hosted by Florida State.
The Red Raiders will begin the weekend with a doubleheader against Florida A&M at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 9 with game two set to begin at 4 p.m. Both games will be played at the University Softball Complex on the campus of Florida A&M.
Following their doubleheader, the Red Raiders will then play (RV) Charlotte and No. 4 Florida State at 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., respectively, at JoAnne Graf Field on Saturday. Tech will conclude its trip to Tallahassee with an 11 a.m. game against (RV) Charlotte on Sunday.
QUICK HITS-
Head coach Craig Snider returns seven starters from last season's team including Alanna Barraza, Arriana Villa, Abbie Orrick, Riley Love, Kennedy Crites, Carson Armijo and Kailey Wyckoff.
Barraza, Crites and Elder are coming off career seasons as they recorded their best batting averages of their careers and will look to build on that this season.
In the circle, the Red Raiders return Ranci Willis, Maddie Kuehl and Olivia Rains while adding Chassety Raines and transfer Maddy Wright. Raines was on the team last season but did not pitch. Dating back to her time at Texas Lutheran University, Raines is a perfect 19-0 when starting.
Historically, the Red Raiders are 0-1 against Florida A&M with their last matchup coming in 2018 and are 2-0 against Florida State after playing them twice in 2002. Tech and Charlotte have never faced off but share a connection as transfer Maddy Wright spent her last four seasons there.
Snider along with assistant coaches Bryce Te Kulve and Morgan Klaevemann have deep ties to the Florida State program. Snider was the assistant coach for the 2018 National Championship Seminoles team which featured Klaevemann as the center fielder. Te Kulve spent two seasons in Tallahassee before coming to Lubbock. He worked with pitchers as a graduate assistant learning from one of the best minds in softball in Lonni Alameda.
The Red Raiders are 0-10 against teams ranked No. 4 but are coming off a season where they recorded five wins against ranked teams.
