Red Raiders split first two games at home

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech split their first two games of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic on Friday. The Red Raiders (14-4) defeated Merrimack College in five innings, 8-0 before falling to UTEP 2-3 in a close battle.

GAME ONE
Â
- The Red Raiders jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by way of a 256-foot homer off the bat of Arriana Villa in the first.
- Abbie Orrick drove in a run in the on a single in the second and then a double steal by Logan Halleman and Alanna Barraza scored the Red Raiders third run as Barraza crossed home plate.
- Tech then put up four runs in the third off of RBIs from Demi Elder, Orrick and Maddy Wright.
- Kennedy Crites put the finishing touches on the game with a solo shot in the fifth inning.
- Maddy Wright held a perfect game going into the fifth before walking one and allowing a hit. Wright still had another sensational outing as she improved to 5-1 on the season.
GAME TWO
- UTEP led for the entirety of the game after a two-run homer in the second inning got things started for them. They picked up another run in the third on an RBI single.
- The Red Raiders came back with two runs in the fourth thanks to a towering double by Demi Elder, but their comeback fell short after a close call at the plate in the fourth stopped Tech's late-inning run.
- Zaylie Calderon picked up her fourth save of the season for the Miners after allowing just one hit in the final two innings.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will play two games tomorrow beginning at 4:30 p.m. against Merrimack followed by a 7 p.m. game against New Mexico State.
