February 29, 2024 | Softball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech will play its first home games of the season this weekend as the team hosts the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic beginning on Friday, March 1 and running through Sunday.
Â
Merrimack College, UTEP, New Mexico State and Texas State will all take part in the weekend. Tech is riding a six-game win streak heading into the weekend and will look to extend it with Big 12 play just around the corner.
Â
Tech will face Merrimack on Friday at 11:30 a.m. before playing UTEP at 2 p.m. The Red Raiders will face Merrimack again at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday prior to the night cap against New Mexico State at 7 p.m. Tech will then end the weekend against New Mexico State with a 12 p.m. Sunday game.
Â
QUICK SCOUT-
STORYLINES-
• MADDY & MADDIE - The bullpen was of some interest heading into the 2024 season. The Red Raiders have a good amount of arms, but not much experience behind those arms. Transfer Maddy Wright helped alleviate some of that when she committed to play for coach Snider following four years at Charlotte. Wright has been as advertised early on, with a 1.91 ERA and has a solid 4-1 record. A pleasant surprise early, however, has been the emergence of junior pitcher Maddie Kuehl. In just 10 appearances she has already set new career-highs in innings pitched, batters faced, saves, complete games and strikeouts. This was all highlighted by her brilliant complete game performance against Texas State where she struck out a career-high seven batters in route to her second win of the season.
• SPEED, SPEED, SPEED - The Red Raiders welcomed freshman outfielder Logan Halleman this year and she has immediately made an impact. Halleman drew comparisons to former World Series Champion and current assistant coach Morgan Klaevemann for her speed both on the base paths and in the outfield. She has started her career a perfect 7-for-7 on stolen bases while hitting .400 in 14 games played.
• LOVE IS (HITTING IT) IN THE AIR - Senior Riley Love has seemed to save the best for last as she has been on an absolute tear to start the 2024 season. Love has recorded 15 hits, six doubles, four home runs, 18 RBIs and 35 total bases - all of which mark career highs. Her glove has been just as solid, having several stellar plays at the hot corner to save runs and base hits.
ABOUT JEANNINE McHANEY-
Jeannine McHaney was described by former Texas Tech Athletics Director, Gerald Myers, as "the most influential figure in the development of women's athletic programs at Texas Tech." McHaney served Texas Tech from 1966 until her death in 1994. She was the first women inducted into the Texas Tech Hall of Honor and was named the Texas Tech Woman of the year in 1976. In 2006, McHaney was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators.

- Merrimack enters the weekend 2-7. This will be the first ever match up between the Warriors and Red Raiders. As a team, the Warriors are hitting .247 and have a total ERA of 5.38.

- New Mexico State, like UTEP, also brings a winning record to Lubbock. The Red Raiders are 25-13 against the Aggies all-time, including a 9-5 victory against them in their last matchup back in 2019. The Aggies are hitting .302 as a team and have a team ERA of 3.65.
