SAN DIEGO – After recording the doubles point and three singles wins, the Texas Tech Red Raiders got a 4-0 sweep over the Utah Utes on Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Complex on day two of the Ed Collins Spring Classic.
The No. 75 Red Raiders (8-7) collected their 11th overall and fourth-consecutive doubles point against Utah (3-9). After tying the Utes duo of Dylan Applegate and Geremia Rossi, 1-1, both Jonas Gundacker and Takeyasu Sekiguchi would win five of the next six games for a decisive, 6-2, victory at court three.
It would be No. 32 Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak to clinch the doubles point for Tech the second day in a row. The Red Raiders and the Utah pairing of Geronimo Espin Busleiman and Bruno Krenn went back-and-forth the entire match. The Utes eventually led 4-3, before Abboud and Pawlak claimed three-straight games for the 6-4 win at court one.
In singles, both teams were battling as four of six matches went into third sets. However, Tech was able to get back-to-back straight set victories at courts six and three, respectively, to extend the lead.
First, Sekiguchi and Michael Blando were competing at court six. The Red Raider found himself down early, 0-3, before coming back to tie the set at 5-5. Sekiguchi would win the next two games for the 7-5 first set win. In set two, the Red Raider posted a bagel, 6-0, en route to a victory.
Freshman Niksa Arsic put another point on the board after taking down Jayson Blando at court three. The Serbia native went down 2-3 in set one before winning the remaining four games for a 6-3 score. Both players traded games in the second set until it was even at 3-3. Arsic would find his groove again and take the match after winning set two, 6-3.
Clinching the victory for the Red Raiders was Pawlak at court four. Taking on Applegate, Pawlak put together a commanding, 6-2, win in the first set before dropping set two by a 2-6 score. The Red Raider then took a 4-2 advantage in the final set and kept the momentum to close out the match, 6-4, for the win.
Texas Tech will finish competition at the Ed Collins Spring Classic with a match on Sunday, March 17.
