March 16, 2024 | Women's Tennis
AMES, Iowa – After winning five first sets in singles, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders are heading back to Lubbock with a 4-0 win over the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday afternoon at the Ames High Tennis Courts.
No. 27-ranked Texas Tech (12-5, 5-1 Big 12) continues to dominate in doubles as the Lady Raiders secured their 13th doubles point of the year. It started with just a 20-minute victory at court two for Mariya Polishchuk and Cristina Tiglea. The Lady Raider duo took a 2-1 lead, then won four-straight games against Iowa State (2-10, 0-5 Big 12) tandem Gala Arangio and Valeska San Martin to claim it, 6-1.
Clinching the doubles point was No. 7 pairing Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova over Isabella Dunlap and Anna Kuearum. The Lady Raiders took a 3-2 advantage, then won the next three games for a 6-2 win. When the point was clinched, Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Camryn Stepp were leading Ashlee Narker and Juliette Nask by a 5-4 score before going unfinished.
The Lady Raiders just needed three singles wins to finish the match with a victory – and they did just that. First, Tech got its second point of the day when Dmitrichenko dominated against San Martin at court four. The Lady Raider gave up just one game in the match to take it by a 6-1, 6-0 score.
Next, Sayfetdinova picked up a singles win against Narker at court three. Sayfetdinova allowed one game to Narker in the first set, 6-1. She then took a 4-1 lead in the following set, before winning two of the next four games to secure the third point, 6-1, 6-3.
Clinching the match for the Lady Raiders for the second-straight contest was Polishchuk at court two against Dunlap. Polishchuk led the entire way in set one, eventually winning it by a 6-2 score. Then, she went on to clinch the match with a decisive, 6-1, second set to give the Lady Raiders the sweep. When the match was finished, Komac was ahead of Nask at court five, 6-3, 4-3, and Jermine Sherif had a sizeable lead over Arangio at court six, 6-2, 5-1 before going unfinished.
Up next, the Lady Raiders host the BYU Cougars on March 23 at 11 a.m. in the McLeod Tennis Center.
