March 26, 2024 | Baseball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Baseball received a pair of three-run home runs from Gavin Kash (sixth) and Owen Washburn (eighth) to cruise to a 16-4 run-rule victory over Stephen F. Austin Tuesday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Â
In a game that was moved up to a 12:35 p.m. from the original 6:30 p.m. start time, Texas Tech (18-7) used five runs in the sixth and six runs in the eighth to record the second run-rule victory of the season.
Â
After sophomore Zach Erdman handled the first three innings and recorded the first out of the fourth, the Red Raiders got three and two-thirds from junior Trendan Parish. Parish did not allow a run or walk a batter, as he scattered three hits and punched out six to earn his second win of the season.
Â
Seven of Tech's nine starters in the lineup drove in at least one run highlighted by multiple RBIs from Kash, Landon Stripling, Drew Woodcox and Tracer Lopez. Lopez went 2-for-4 in the win scoring twice while Woodcox and Stripling each went 1-for-4.
Â
SFA (3-23) struck first on Tuesday, using a pair of doubles and two singles to take a 2-0 lead just two outs into the ballgame.
Â
With runners on second and third, Erdman used a clutch strikeout to limit the damage. The two first inning runs were all the lefty would allow in his 54-pitch outing. The underclassman scattered five hits and struck out two.
Â
After stranding a pair of one-out baserunners in the first, Tech quickly tired the game in the second when Stripling unloaded the bases with a one-out single through the right side that scored Travis Sanders and Kash.
Â
In his first start since Mar. 16 at Baylor, Sanders was on base four times (three walks) and score three times.
Â
Back in a tied ball game, Erdman needed just eight pitches to toss a 1-2-3 third inning, before running into some trouble in the fourth when he allowed a one-out double to Zerikc Warre.
Â
Warre was the final batter that Erdman would face, as the Red Raiders called upon Parish who needed just seven pitches to strike out a pair.
Â
The two punchouts swung momentum back in the favor of the Red Raiders, who used a pair of walks and a single to load the bases for Damian Bravo. Bravo was hit by the fifth offering he saw from SFAs Crew Wilson, bringing in the go-ahead run.
Â
Wilson did not record an out and allowed three runs, suffering the loss in Tuesday's ballgame.
Â
With one out, Tech used an RBI single from Austin Green and a fielders choice from Woodcox to close the three-run frame and take a 6-2 lead into the fifth.
Â
After the teams traded zeros in the fifth, Parish stranded a lead-off double at second in the sixth, closing the frame with back-to-back swinging strikeouts.
Â
A one-out sac-fly from Woodcox and a single from Bazzell gave Tech an 8-2 lead and brought Kash to the plate with runners on first and second with two outs.
Â
Up 2-1 in the count, Kash deposited a pitch into the home bullpen to put Tech up 10-2 heading to the seventh.
Â
With the game still 10-2 in the eighth, SFA added two runs on a lead-off home run to pull to within 10-4 bringing Tech up needing three runs for a walk-off win.
Â
In the eighth, Tech got back-to-back doubles from Woodcox and Dylan Maxcey to go ahead 11-4. After a two-out walk, Lopez dove in two more with a triple off the right field wall. The knock brought Tech to within a run of a walk-off win.
Â
Freshman Garet Boehm pinch-hit and was hit by a 1-0 fast ball to put runners on the corners from Owen Washburn. Needing just a run to walk it off, Washburn provided three on a towering 388-foot homer to right.
Â
With the victory, the Red Raiders have now won 11 straight non-conference games and are a perfect 10-0 at home in non-conference play.
