No. 11 Tech earns runner-up finish at Cabo Collegiate
March 05, 2024 | Men's Golf
CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO — The No. 11 Texas Tech men's golf team earned a second-place finish at the 2024 Cabo Collegiate after firing a collective 4-under-par across the tournament's final 18 holes on Tuesday at Twin Dolphin Club. The Red Raiders finished 10-under-par after 54 holes, trailing only No. 6 Arizona State (-19), but bested the likes of No. 9 Arkansas (-2), No. 3 Vanderbilt (+1), No. 5 Ole Miss (+5) and No. 12 Florida State (+5) to round out the top-five.
The runner-up finish for the Red Raiders follows up a team title at The Prestige last time out (Feb. 19-21) and a fourth-place finish at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate (Feb. 8-10) in the event prior. Tech has moved up in the national rankings from No. 21 to No. 11 in that span and awaits Wednesday's weekly poll issued via Scoreboard powered by Clippd.
The Red Raiders were steered by four top-20 finishes on the Cabo Collegiate individual leaderboard. Matthew Comegys paced the way in sixth after posting a 5-under-par 208 for the week, capping his run with a birdie on hole No. 18 to finish round three even-par (71). Comegys' performance earned him his second straight top-ten finish at the Twin Dolphin Club — he tied for eighth as a freshman in last year's edition of the event — and gave the now-sophomore top-ten finishes in each of his three spring events.Â
Tyran Snyders joined Comegys in the top 10 with a final card of 4-under-par 209, placing the senior in a three-way tie for seventh. The placement was Snyder's ninth career top-ten finish and third of the spring. Tech's biggest riser of the day was Baard Skogen, who shot up 13 spots to 19th place on the final leaderboard after firing a bogey-free final round. The senior ended round three with a team-best 3-under-par 68, his second sub-70 round in his last five rounds played.
Junior Calum Scott rounded out Tech's top-20 finishers after ending the week in a three-way tie for 20th place at 1-over-par 214. Fellow Red Raider Charlie DeLong fell 10 spots into a tie for 35th but ended the day on a strong note after going 1-over across his final nine holes.
The Red Raiders will enjoy nearly two weeks off before returning to action March 18-19 at the All-American Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas.
