Tech sits in seventh at Big 12 Championship

Three Red Raiders sit in the top 20 as Tech fires a 9-over-par 293 to finish the first round of the Big 12 Championship in seventh place at Houston Oaks Country Club.
HOCKLEY, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf team sits in seventh place at the Big 12 Championship after carding a 9-over-par 293 on Thursday in the first round of play. With a field of 13 teams and 65 players at Houston Oaks Country Club, the Red Raiders have three firmly inside the individual top 20 in Gala Dumez, Klara Hurtova and Lauren Zaretsky.
Tech was led in round one by Dumez, who was one of just 11 players in the field to shoot a score of even-par or better on the day. The senior from France finds herself inside the top 10 (T-6) after firing an even-par 71, which included birdies on each of her opening two holes and a bogey-free 1-under-par second nine on the course. Dumez sits just three shots behind three players at the top of the leaderboard entering Friday's second round as she chases her second career individual Big 12 championship.
In addition to Dumez inside the top 20, Hurtova is tied for 12th place while Lauren Zaretsky is tied for 17th place. Hurtova fired a 1-over-par 72 on Thursday aided by six birdies, which were tied for the most of any player in the first round. Zaretsky carded a 2-over-par 73 after a challenging opening nine holes, the sophomore recovered by firing three birdies in a five-hole stretch to secure a top-20 finish in the round.
The other score countable towards the team total for the Red Raiders in round one came from Kylee Loewe. The junior from Scottsdale, Arizona is tied for 48th after recording a 6-over-par 77 to round out the team score for Tech on Thursday.
The Red Raiders are just seven strokes back of No. 11 Texas, who sit in first place on the team leaderboard following a 2-over-par 286 in round one.
Tech will continue its quest for the Big 12 Championship as the tournament continues with round two on Friday, with tee times staggered between 8 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. The Red Raiders will again tee off between 8:35 and 9:15 a.m. as they did on Thursday; what will be different is they will tee off from the No. 1 tee box on Friday versus the No. 10 tee box.
