Tech falls to No. 9 Oklahoma at Big 12 Championships

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Texas Tech Red Raiders lost in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championships after the No. 9-ranked Oklahoma Sooners won by a 4-0 score at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
The Sooners (20-3) were able to take an early lead over the Red Raiders (9-15) after winning the doubles point. Oklahoma got a 6-1 victory at court three and was up on the remaining two courts, but Tech made it interesting as the doubles pairs made comebacks in their respective matches.
At court one, No. 39 Piotr Pawlak and Sebastian Abboud would go down, 1-4, to No. 53 Baptiste Anselmo and Alex Martiez. However, the Red Raiders were able to win four of the next five games to even the match at 5-5 before it went unfinished.
Oklahoma was able to clinch the point at court two whenever Kholo Montsi and Luis Alvarez beat Reed Collier and Takeyasu Sekiguchi, but it wasn't easy. The Tech pair went down 1-2 then broke serve to tie it at 2-all. At 2-4, the Red Raiders would win two-consecutive games for the 4-4 score, then tied it at 5-5 with another break. But, the OU tandem held on to win it by a 7-5 score to give the Sooners the advantage.
The Sooners continued their momentum in singles after getting back-to-back wins. First, Alvarez was able to defeat Arsic in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1, at court four. Then, Mark Mandlik made it 3-0 in OU's favor after beating Abboud at court six by a 6-2, 6-2 score right after. Â
The Sooners clinched the match at court two after No. 64-ranked Montsi overtook Collier. The Red Raider had a 4-1 advantage to open set one, before the Sooner won four of the next five games to tie it at 5-all. A tiebreaker ensued where Montsi was able to claim the first set, 7-6 (3). The Sooner followed with a 6-0 second set and clinched the match for Oklahoma.
