Red Raiders complete day one of Big 12 outdoors

WACO, Texas – The Texas Tech track and field team wrapped up day one of the 2024 Big 12 Championships late Thursday night at Clyde Track and Field Stadium.

At 5:30 p.m. the meet into a weather delay and resumed at 9:20 p.m. with the 1500m prelims.

Despite a late-night finish, Anastasia Chepkorir delivered a bronze medal for Tech as she placed third in the 10,000m with a time of 34:48.13. She was the first Red Raider to score on the women's side.
Konner Wood put the first points on the board for Tech as he placed sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 62.80m (206-0). He entered the competition as the ninth-rated thrower in the Big 12.

In the decathlon, Cole Omlin ended day one scoring 3,743 points – 23 points ahead of his day one PB. It was highlighted with a new lifetime best in the high jump where he took first clearing 2.01m (6-7) and another PB in the 400m (50.99).

The 1500m races were led by Edward Rush and Juliet Cherubet as they each secured the big "Q". Rush finished second in his race with a time of 3:42.86 – No. 6 all-time for Tech. Meanwhile, Cherubet won her heat with a time of 4:18.28 – No. 6 all-time for Tech.

The first heat of the 200m prelims with Tech featured four Red Raiders as Shawn Brown led the pack with a time of 20.62 (1.6w) to qualify for the finals. Overall, four Red Raiders secured finals lanes for Saturday - Josh Bour (20.74), Antoine Andrews (20.74) and Jack Marshall (20.85).

Caleb Dean made his season debut, running in the 400m hurdles with a 50.22, placing second in his heat – the second-fastest time of the night. Oskar Edlund won his heat with a time of 50.72, booking his finals spot for Saturday – the third-fastest time of the night.

Ernest Cheruiyot placed fourth in the 10,000m final giving the Red Raiders five points with a time of 29:21.67.
