May 06, 2024 | Women's Golf
Representing Texas Tech as an individual at the Las Vegas Regional, Lauren Zaretsky fired a 1-over-par 73 to conclude round one tied for 18th place.
LAS VEGAS – Texas Tech's Lauren Zaretsky carded a first-round 1-over-par 73 on Monday at the NCAA Las Vegas Regional, hosted at Spanish Trail Country Club. It was the first of three rounds, May 6-8, for the sophomore who qualified to play as an individual in the 2024 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships.
Zaretsky sits in 18th place and is third among the individual qualifiers, in a field of 66 players. To advance to the national championships, May 17-22, Zaretsky will need to be the 54-hole individual leader versus the five others who qualified as an individual as well as being the low scorer among the players from the seven teams (35 individuals) that miss the cut for the national championships.
Zaretsky's day began with a consistent opening nine holes, she was 1-under after the first eight but ended the front nine with a bogey to move her back to even par at the turn. The sophomore opened the back nine by firing back-to-back birdies on holes No. 10 and 11, moving her to 2-under. Zaretsky dropped a shot on the next hole, carding a bogey on the Par 3, 160-yard 13th hole. She remained 1-under through 16 holes before recording back-to-back bogeys on No. 17 and No. 18, ending Monday 1-over-par (73).Â
If the tournament concluded after round one, Zaretsky would sit in 12th as it pertains to qualifying for nationals as an individual; she trails two golfers who entered the tournament as an individual and nine others who would be on the seven teams that would not qualify. The leading mark for an individual not on an advancing team, after the first 18 holes, is 1-under-par, shared by New Mexico's Myah McDonald and Oklahoma's Savannah Barber. The top five finishing teams on Monday were Arkansas (-8), Florida State (-5), Purdue (-4), UCLA (+3) and Baylor (+4).
Zaretsky will continue her pursuit of an NCAA Championship bid on Tuesday with round two of the Las Vegas regional, where she is slated to tee off at 11:50 a.m. CT.
