Zaretsky improves to even par at Las Vegas Regional
May 07, 2024 | Women's Golf
Lauren Zaretsky recorded an impressive six birdie 1-under-par performance in round two of the Las Vegas NCAA Regional at Spanish Trail Country Club on Tuesday.
LAS VEGAS – Texas Tech's Lauren Zaretsky fired a 1-under-par 71 in round two of the NCAA Las Vegas Regional on Tuesday, contested at Spanish Trail Country Club. After recording a 73 in round one on Monday, the sophomore sits at even-par after 36 holes entering Wednesday's final round.
Zaretsky is tied for 17th place out of the field of 63 players and is third among the six players who qualified as an individual. To advance to the national championships, May 17-22, Zaretsky will need to be the 54-hole individual leader versus the five others who qualified as an individual as well as being the low scorer among the players from the seven teams (35 individuals) that miss the cut for the national championships.
After closing Monday's first round with consecutive bogeys on holes No. 17 and No. 18, Zaretsky responded emphatically by opening her second round with birdies not only on the first two holes but birdies on four of her first six holes as she dipped to 4-under-par six holes into round two. She recorded a bogey on hole No. 7, making the turn on Tuesday at 3-under-par.
Zaretsky opened the back nine for the second day in a row with a birdie on the Par 4, 386-yard 10th hole. Bogeys on holes No. 11 and No. 15, and a double bogey at hole No. 16 highlighted a difficult stretch for Zaretsky, however, she was able to recover and conclude her round how she started it, with a birdie, at hole No. 18. The birdie to end Zaretsky's second round pushed her below par on the day as she finished with a 71.
Zaretsky owns nine birdies after two rounds, which is tied for the sixth-most among all individuals in the tournament; there is a three-way tie for the most birdies in the tournament at 11.Â
As it currently stands, Zaretsky is tied for eighth among players competing for the individual bid to nationals (see standings below). She trails two golfers who qualified for the tournament as an individual and five who are on teams currently outside of the top five. Oklahoma's Savannah Barber leads all individuals not on an advancing team after 36 holes at 4-under-par, while UNLV's Toa Yokoyama and New Mexico's Myah McDonald lead the six players who qualified as individuals at 1-under-par. Entering Wednesday's final round, the top five teams are Arkansas (-16), Purdue (-12), UCLA (-2), Florida State (-1), and Baylor (+2).
Zaretsky will conclude her pursuit of an NCAA Championship bid on Wednesday with the third and final round of the Las Vegas Regional. She is set to tee off at 11:50 a.m. CT.
