Red Raiders in seventh after day one of Carmel Cup

PEBBLE BEACH, CALIF. – Texas Tech's Lauren Zaretsky led the Red Raiders on Friday, carding a 3-over-par 75, as the team opened their season at the Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Zaretsky sits 18th among the 48-player field while the team is in seventh out of the eight teams in action.
Zaretsky, the Red Raiders scoring average leader last season, had a slow start on the front nine as she finished 4-over-par but heated up on the back for a strong finish. The junior ended her round with three birdies over her final five holes, including a birdie on the 18th hole to put her 1-under-par overall on the back nine.
In the unique, six-player, count-five score format, Maja Ambroziak and Klara Hurtova finished second and third, respectively, on the Red Raiders' scorecard. Both finished in the top 30 as Ambroziak carded a 4-over-par 76 and Hurtova shot a 6-over 78. Ambroziak was unable to card a birdie on the round, but had a steady day filled with 14 pars, including eight on the back nine. Meanwhile, Hurtova started strong, firing a 1-over 37 during the first nine holes before going 5-over-par on the back nine.
Overall, Texas Tech is in seventh place at 30-over-par (390), which consisted of the five countable scores from the day. The Red Raiders lead Oklahoma by seven strokes and trail sixth-place Oklahoma State by nine strokes.
The Red Raiders will be back in action for round two, starting at 6:30 a.m. PT, with Kylee Loewe having the honors off the first tee.
