September 30, 2024 | Baseball
Dobbins went 8-5 with a 3.08 ERA in 25 starts across AA and AAA
BOSTON – Splitting time between AA Portland and AAA Worchester, former Texas Tech right-handed pitcher Hunter Dobbins has been tabbed the Boston Red Sox Minor League Starting Pitcher of the Year, the organization announced.
A native of Bryan, Dobbins began the 2024 season in AA (Portland) before being called up to the Red Sox AAA affiliate in Worchester back in late August.
Making 25 appearances (all starts) for the Sea Dogs, Dobbins went 7-3 striking out 98 batters in 105 innings pitched. The righty allowed just two home runs in AA/AAA and held opposing batters to a .232 batting average.
After shining in the organization's AA affiliate, Dobbins was called up to the "Woo-Sox" on Aug. 22 for an Aug. 30 start. Pitching in four games, Dobbins went 1-2 with 22 punchouts in 20.2 innings. Dobbins lowered his ERA from 3.17 in AA to a paltry 2.61 in AAA.
In his 25 starts, Dobbins fired at least in 18 of them, including a seven inning eight strike performance back on May 31.
Before earning the promotion, Dobbins closed his AA career on fire, allowing just three runs over his final 26.1 innings pitched. Dobbins didn't allow a run in his final two starts for Portland.
An eighth-round selection by Boston in the 2021 draft, Dobbins is currently ranked as the No. 21 (No. 8 pitcher) in Boston's system and will likely be added to the Red Sox 40-man roster this winter.
