January 11, 2025 | Men's Basketball
LUBBOCK – No. 3 Iowa State made a last-second shot at the end of regulation and escaped with an 85-84 overtime win over Texas Tech which led by as many as 13 points in the first half on Saturday at United Supermarkets Arena.
The Red Raiders (11-4, 2-2 Big 12) trailed by one with 4.1 seconds remaining in overtime and had a Darrion Williams shot in the final second miss to the right as the upset bid fell just short. The Cyclones (14-1, 4-0 Big 12) extended an 11-game winning streak after overcoming a 40-34 halftime deficit, getting a Joshua Jefferson layup to tie the game at 74 to force overtime, and once again rallying after trailing 84-83 with Williams giving Tech the lead with an inside shot with 15 seconds remaining in the extra session. Iowa State finished the game shooting 17-for-24 from the free-throw line, including getting pair from Joshua Jefferson with 4.1 seconds remaining which proved to be the game-winning points.
"Iowa State obviously has a great team, a physical team, a mature team," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. "You could see the grit they play with, especially down the stretch. I loved a lot of the things we did as a team this afternoon, but when it got down to winning time and possessions as the game went on, you could sense their urgency with paint touches getting us right to the rim. We weren't making them take fade-away 3s to beat us. They put it on us and got to the free-throw line and made them. Their physical, downhill mentality and ability to turn us over and make us play away from the rim was the difference. Give them all the credit. They came in here and beat us."
Texas Tech will now go play at Kansas State on Tuesday in a game set for 8 p.m. at the Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kansas. The Red Raiders are 2-0 in Big 12 road games this season after earning wins at Utah and BYU. K-State (7-7, 1-2 Big 12) is hosting Houston tonight.
