Corky Classic
Named after Tech legend Corky Oglesby, the "Corky Classic" recognizes Oglesby's nearly 50 years of service to the university, including 20 (1975-1995) spent as the head men's track and field coach. His list of successful athletes included 32 All-Americans, 11 Southwest Conference outdoor champions and seven SWC indoor individual champions.
After stepping down as the head track coach in 1995, Oglesby remained active in the sport as he attended top events throughout the world each year as either a spectator or as a meet official. He later transitioned to a special projects coordinator in the Red Raider Club, a position he remained active in up until his passing in November of 2017. The inaugural Corky Classic would start the following season.
What to Watch For
The field will be loaded with top talent from all different levels this weekend. The Power-4 teams include Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Florida, Kentucky, Miami (FL), South Carolina, SMU, Texas A&M, and TCU. The Florida men come in as the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Champions.
On the women's side, a newcomer to look out for is Shelby Frank. A senior transfer from Minnesota, Frank was the indoor national runner-up in the weight throw and comes in with a personal best of 24.14m (79-2 ½) – nearly nine feet of Tech's current school record (70-11 ¼). On the men's side, Malachi Snow is a sophomore transfer from San Jose State who had a breakout season outdoors, becoming a First Team All-American in the 110m hurdles. He's slated to go in the 60m and 60m hurdles.
Through the air, returning All-American Adeshina Temitope is slated to go in the high jump, while Sean Gribble represents the men in the pole vault as the women's side will be represented by Olivia Cade and Kashlee Dickinson. Â
Ruta Lasmane returns to defend her NCAA indoor triple jump title as Serena Clark and Success Umukoro are set to go in various relays/short sprints. All three Red Raiders enter the season with only indoor eligibility left.
