TEMPE, Ariz. – Both Bailey Maupin and Jasmine Shavers eclipsed the 1,000-career points mark, but the Texas Tech Lady Raiders dropped their first conference game of the year against the Arizona State Sun Devils, 79-61, at Desert Financial Arena on Wednesday evening.
For the Lady Raiders (12-3, 1-1 Big 12), Shavers led the way with 24 points on 46.6 percent shooting from the field (7-for-15). Totaling her second 20-plus point game this year and 12th overall, Shavers was perfect at the free throw line as she made the most without any misses of her career after going 9-for-9.
Maupin, who needed three points to get to 1,000, did just that after nailing a 3-pointer in the first quarter, while also picking up two assists and four rebounds. Junior Sarengbe Sanogo almost had her second-consecutive double-double after tallying a team-high seven rebounds and nine points against the Sun Devils (7-7, 1-1 Big 12). Redshirt junior Denae Fritz led the team with three steals and two 3-pointers as she posted 10 points for the second-straight game, tying a season high.
The Sun Devils began the game with the first five points, but the Lady Raiders responded immediately. First, Fritz hit a 3-pointer, then Sanogo made a free throw and a layup, and finally, Shavers stole the ball that led to a fastbreak layup to make it 8-5 in Tech's favor. The Lady Raiders took a 12-9 lead, but the Sun Devils came back and went on a run, scoring 12 of the next 15 points for the 21-15 advantage at the end of the first.
Arizona State went on a 4-0 run to start the second period, until Fritz hit a jumper. The Sun Devils scored seven of the following eight points to lead 32-18, before Arizona native Maya Peat made a strong layup under the basket. Shavers scored the last four Texas Tech points of the second quarter as Arizona State held a 38-25 lead at half.
The Lady Raiders went on a 10-2 run in the first minute and a half of the third period, thanks to 3-pointers by Jordyn Merritt and Fritz and two free throws by Shavers. Arizona State stopped the run with a jumper before Shavers scored four more points with a free throw and a 3-pointer to eclipse 1,000 career points and get Tech within four. However, the Sun Devils went on a 14-2 run to extend their lead to 13. Peat made a free throw, then Sanogo scored on a fastbreak layup thanks to a dish from Maupin, but Arizona State held the 62-46 advantage at the end of the period.
In the final quarter, Arizona State started off by scoring seven of the first nine points to take a 21-point lead, 69-48. Shavers made the next four Texas Tech points before the Sun Devils answered with four of their own. With 5:09 left in the game, the Lady Raiders would get two free throws from Shavers and a fastbreak layup from Sanogo to make it 73-56. Adlee Blacklock scored late in the period, converting the and-one play for three points, but Tech would fall in by a score of 79-61 to the Sun Devils. Â
Up next, the Lady Raiders head to Manhattan, Kan., to play the No. 11-ranked Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 4 p.m.
