
Texas Tech falls at No. 11 Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Graduate senior Maya Peat reached 1,000 career points and junior Bailey Maupin recorded her fifth 20+ point game, but the Texas Tech Lady Raiders fell to the No. 11 Kansas State Wildcats, 77-57, at Bramlage Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
Maupin collected her 13th double-figure scoring game of the season and second 20+ scoring game in conference with a team-high of 21 points for the Lady Raiders (12-4, 1-2 Big 12). Peat shot 4-for-5 from the field for a season-high of 10 points to hit 1,000 in her career. Graduate Jordyn Merritt led the team with six rebounds and a season-best of four blocks, while adding a team-leading three steals and two assists.
Junior Jasmine Shavers tallied her 15th double-figure performance this year with 12 points and had two assists and two steals. Tech forced 17 Kansas State (15-1, 3-0 Big 12) turnovers, five above their season average. The Lady Raiders also collected their second-highest blocks with nine in the game, while also grabbing 11 steals.
K-State scored first to start the game, but Sarengbe Sanogo tied it at 2-all thanks to a dish from Shavers. The Wildcats scored the next four points until Shavers stopped the run with a mid-range jumper. Maupin also hit a mid-range shot, but K-State held the 11-6 advantage going into the media timeout. Tech cut the K-State lead to three when Jalynn Bristow made a fastbreak layup. The Wildcats looked to head into the second quarter with a seven-point advantage until Denae Fritz nailed a last second 3-pointer to make it 20-16.
The Lady Raiders began the second period with a block from Sanogo followed by two made free throws by Shavers. Then, Bristow got herself a block which led to a Maupin layup. Peat would eclipse 1,000 career points after making a layup to tie the game at 22-22, and then doing so again to even the game at 24-all. The Lady Raiders took their first lead of the contest when Maupin made a jumper, but the Wildcats answered with five-straight points. Two free throws from Maupin cut the deficit to just one, then K-State scored eight of the next 10 points for a 38-32 lead heading to the half.
K-State opened the third period on a 6-0 run to force a Texas Tech timeout, leading by a 44-32 score. The Wildcats hit a 3-pointer before Peat stopped the run with a mid-range shot. Kansas State went ahead, 52-34, after making two free throws and another three with 4:57 left in the quarter. Shavers connected with three free throws and Sanogo got a second-chance layup thanks to an offensive rebound, but K-State led 66-41 after three.Â
Maupin scored six-straight points for the Lady Raiders at the beginning of the final quarter, cutting K-State's lead to 68-47. The Wildcats answered with the next five points, though Merritt and Fritz recorded blocks in that span. Coming out of the media timeout, Adlee Blacklock made her first 3-pointer of the game to make it 73-50. Texas Tech kept fighting until the end, but the Wildcats held on to win it, 77-57. Â
