
Lady Raiders back home against No. 17 WVU

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders are back at home with a game against the West Virginia Mountaineers on Wednesday, January 8 at 6 p.m. at United Supermarkets Arena. West Virginia leads the all-time series with an 18-6 record, winning the last game on Feb. 6, 2024 by an 82-59 score.
The Lady Raiders (12-4, 1-2 Big 12) currently average 5.8 blocks per game, which ranks 11th nationally and fourth in the Big 12. In addition, junior Sarengbe Sanogo ranks 18th in the nation and third in the Big 12 with 31 total blocks.
The Lady Raiders are forcing 20.94 turnovers per game which ranks 40th in the NCAA and second in the conference and also rank 48th nationally with 10.7 steals per game. The Lady Raiders have forced 20+ turnovers in eight games this season so far, and average 17.8 turnovers forced per game in conference play.
At Arizona State, two Lady Raiders eclipsed the 1,000-point mark. Going into the game, Maupin needed three points to hit 1k, and she got just that - nailing a 3-pointer to give her 1,000. Then, Shavers needed 15 points in the game to hit 1,000 as she ended the contest with 24 against the Sun Devils. Graduate senior Maya Peat also recorded her 1,000th point at No. 11 Kansas State, when she totaled 10 points in the game.
Both Jasmine Shavers and Bailey Maupin have been the top two Lady RaidÂers to draw fouls for the team. Both are ranked 68th in the nation and fifth in the Big 12 with 57 free throws made. Shavers is shooting a team-best 85.1 percent from the free-throw line, which is third in conference and 56th in the NCAA. Maupin leads the team with 76 free throw attempts, which is good for 56th in the nation and fourth in conference.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The No. 17 West Virginia Mountaineers are 12-2 overall and 2-1 in conference heading into the game. Their two losses were to Texas and Colorado, but they have key wins over UCF, BYU, Texas A&M, Pitt and Boise State. The Mountaineers are averaging 81.4 points per game and only allowing 51.0 points per game. Shooting 46.9 percent from the field, West Virginia is averaging 36.5 rebounds per game, 14.9 assists per game and 14.6 steals per game. Three Mountaineers average double-figure scoring so far – JJ Quinerly (18.7), Jordan Harrison (14.2) and Sydney Shaw (12.5). Leading the team in rebounding is Kyah Watson with 7.9 per game.
