Tech drops three-set match to Wildcats
MANHATTAN, Kansas– Texas Tech volleyball (8-9, 0-5) dropped its match to Kansas State (10-4, 3-3) by a score of 3-0 on Friday night.
Kenna McKenzie led the team with five kills as Addie Kanouff, Aliyah McDonald, Tatum Johnson and Shelby Ignash all finished with four kills. All four of Ignash's kills would come in the third set as she tried to keep the Red Raiders in it.
Peyton Dunn and Katelyn Cochran combined for 21 assists as Sierra Grizzle led the team with 15 digs. Kalli Jioshvili Ravva finished with three kills as Jasmine Martin and Ashlyn Bellamy each tacked on two kills to round out the scorers for Tech.
Kansas State's Shaylee Meyers and Aniya Clinton combined for 30 of the teams 45 kills and both hit over .300 with Meyers hitting at an incredible .533 clip.
How it Happened:
The Wildcats had a lot of success running their offense in the first set, hitting over .400 with 19 kills led by Shaylee Meyers seven kills on a .500 hitting percentage. Tech had four players with multiple kills but couldn't get Kansas State uncomfortable early as the Wildcats took the set 25-15.
Kansas State jumped out to a 10-1 run in the second set and did not look back as they again hit .400 and had four blocks to propel them to a 25-14 set win.
The Red Raiders kept the third set much closer as it was tied 13-13 in a back-and-forth early part of the set before the Wildcats took a small 15-13 lead into the media timeout. Tech took the first two points out of the timeout to tie it back up. The Red Raiders called a timeout with K-State taking a late 21-19 lead, but Ignash was a big part of keeping Tech in the fight as she had four kills in the set while hitting at a .500 clip. The Wildcats, however, buckled down and scored the final four points to complete the sweep.
UP NEXT: Red Raiders will enter their bye week before hosting BYU and Colorado on October 18 and 22, respectively.
