Tech defeats UCF for first Big 12 win of the season
ORLANDO, Florida – The Red Raiders (9-12, 1-8) took down UCF (12-8, 3-6) 3-1 to secure their first Big 12 win of the season on the backs of strong performances from freshmen Kalli Jioshvili Ravva, Kenna McKenzie and Shelby Ignash.
Jioshvili Ravva again led Tech in kills, posting 15 as McKenzie was right behind her with 14. McKenzie hit an efficient .258 and was in on two blocks. Ignash posted four kills and two blocks but was very timely with her contributions and made touches at the net that helped the offense get in system and had swings on offense that put the Knights out of position.
The duo of Katelyn Cochran and Peyton Dunn combined for 34 assists, Dunn leading the way with 18. Sierra Grizzle was a rock on the backline, posting 23 digs while adding seven assists and had two service aces.
Reagan Engler had five kills and hit .559 as Addie Kanouff and Aliyah McDonald combined for seven kills to round out the major scorers. McDonald also led the team with six blocks as she anchored the block in the middle.
The deciding fourth set was a roller coaster as Tech held a 9-4 lead before giving up the lead as the Knights took a 15-14 lead before extending it to 22-18 lead late in the set. Things looked to be trending towards a fifth set but Tech went on a 7-1 run and scored the final five points of the match to win an emotional match.
How it Happened:
The Knights stormed out to a 12-5 lead in the first set as they hit .667 to open up the match. UCF's hitting percentage came down to earth later in the match but they held Tech to under .100 hitting as they took set one 25-17 in large part due to Avah Armour who had six kills in the set.
The second set was much closer as neither team got much of a run, but the Red Raiders held a three-point lead at 14-11 to force a UCF timeout. Tech extended its lead to 21-15 forcing another Knights timeout before UCF went on a quick 4-2 run that forced a Red Raider timeout at 23-19. The Knights tried to scrap back, but the Red Raiders closed it out to take the set 25-21.
Tech took control of the third set as the Knights used both timeouts to try and stop Red Raider runs to no avail. The Red Raiders hit extremely efficient as McKenzie and Ignash excelled at the net on both offense and defense. Tech took a commanding 25-18 set win to take the lead.
The Red Raiders opened the fourth set on fire, leading 9-4 before the Knights went on a 7-2 run to tie it at 11. UCF then went on to take a 15-14 lead at the media timeout. UCF stretched its lead before the Red Raiders raced back to tie it at 23 and eventually score the final two points to clinch their first Big 12 win of the season.
