Taylor Zdrojewski scored twice and Macy Blackburn added an insurance goal to push the Red Raiders to a bounce-back win
LUBBOCK, Texas – Taylor Zdrojewski scored once in each half, while Macy Blackburn added her fourth goal of the season to push No. 5/3 Texas Tech to a 3-1 bounce-back win over Kansas State Sunday afternoon at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
Off its most lopsided league loss in over eight years at No. 22/7 Colorado Thursday, Texas Tech (13-2-2, 7-1-2 Big 12) used the 21st-minute strike from Zdrojewski to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
After Kansas State (7-6-4, 2-5-3 Big 12) used a 55th minute header from Allison Marshall to tie the contest at one-all, the Red Raiders responded with goals from Zdrojewski (68th minute and Blackburn (72nd minute) to close out their third straight win over the Wildcats and sixth in seven all-time meetings.
On her first goal of the afternoon, Zdrojewski slotted home a low line drive shot into the bottom corner of the net after a pair of beautiful passes from Molly Skurcenski and Sam Courtwright.
Zdrojewski's second of the afternoon was a perfect volley that she ripped down the middle of the goal and a diving Maddie Sibbing. The strike was made possible due in large part due to a pair of strong flicks by Alana Harry and Raliegh Greason.
The Red Raiders third goal, a cross-turned-shot by Blackburn after a pair of strong passes from Courtwright and Zdrojewski, flew past a stunned Sibbing and into the top-left corner of the net. With the two points, her 60th and 61st career, Blackburn moved into solo seventh place on the Red Raiders all-time point list.
In the victory, Nguyen made three saves to bring her career total to 109.
With her brace today, her fifth of the season and sixth career, Zdrojewski reached 15 for the season, becoming the fourth Red Raider (Kristy Frantz, Janine Beckie and Kiersten Davis) as the only players to reach 15 goals in a season. She also reached 25 career goals becoming the eighth player in school history to reach the quarter century mark and now had 33 points on the season, the fifth-most in a single season in program history.
Her 59 career points are the seventh-most in program history.
Following today's win, the Red Raiders improved to a perfect 4-0-0 following a loss or a draw this season and are now 15-0-0 since the start of the 2023 season when following a loss or a draw (includes Postseason play).
HEAD COACH TOM STONE:
"Today was a great tribute to our seniors. On Senior Day we try not to make it super emotional because we know that our parents will and they're all here and the girls are feeling pressure from that and the fact that it's a countdown to their last game. We try and stay in the space of that the best win we can give them is a win on Senior Day. We've had a really good record the last few years on Senior Day. Part of it is the fact that we wait until after the game to say thank you and share memories that can distract us. It's time for that now and we'll do that this week, and at the senior banquet and senior dinner and the end-of-year banquet. We'll have plenty of time to do and say things that will bring out the emotion. But on the day, you have to win the game, and these guys deserved to win on Senior Day, and they played a big role. We got points from Macy and Molly both seniors and to honor that group of seniors that have won so many games was a big deal to us so we're glad that we were able to do it."
