Red Raiders fall in five sets despite McKenzie's 23 kills
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball (10-16, 2-12) dropped its match to Cincinnati (14-10, 6-8) in five sets on Friday evening.
Freshmen Kenna McKenzie and Kalli Jioshvili Ravva combined for 44 of the teams 72 kills going for 23 and 21, respectively. McKenzie's 23 kills mark a new career high as she did so at an efficient .265 clip. Addie Kanouff was in double digits as well with 10 kills while Jasmine Martin finished with six and Peyton Dunn, Aliyah McDonald and Reagan Engler finished with four each.
Jioshvili Ravva, Dunn and Sierra Grizzle all finished with double-doubles. Jioshvili Ravva had 14 digs to go along with her kills while Dunn had 40 assists and 14 digs. Grizzle finished the match with 28 digs and 10 assists. Katelyn Cochran added 10 assists and seven digs of her own.
How it Happened:
Both teams hit well in the first set, Tech hit .368 and the Bearcats .367. The freshmen McKenzie and Jioshvili Ravva combined for 11 of the teams 19 kills as Kanouff notched four of her own while hitting .500. The Bearcats Sydney Nolan was their go-to attacker, leading all attackers with eight kills while also hitting .615. Tech took the set 25-22.
The Red Raiders recorded 19 kills again in the second set and again were led by McKenzie and Jioshvili Ravva who combined for 14 kills, and both hit over .350 in the set. Cincinnati got four blocks, but the Red Raiders were able to get three aces to balance that out. The Red Raiders took a 2-0 lead with a 25-21 set win.
The Bearcats came back in the third set after being down 17-13 late. They used five blocks to capture the momentum and go on a 6-2 run to tie it at 19 before taking the set 25-23.
Cincinnati then forced a fifth set with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
The Bearcats kept their momentum going as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fifth set. The Red Raiders were not able to overcome that deficit as they lost the set 15-7 to lose the match.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will head to Waco to face Baylor on Thursday before playing TCU on Saturday in Fort Worth.
