No. 15/6 Tech drops PK heartbreaker to No. 23/18 Baylor
November 03, 2025 | Women's Soccer
The Red Raiders fell 7-6 in the ninth round of PK attempts
FORT WORTH – Despite a fourth-minute goal from sophomore Sam Courtwright and seven key saves and two PK saves from goalkeeper Faith Nguyen, No. 15/6 Texas Tech Soccer saw its run at the 2025 Big 12 Tournament come to an end, as the Red Raiders fell to No.  23/18 Baylor in nine rounds of PKs in the Quarterfinals of the 2025 Big 12 Tournament.
In the PKs, Texas Tech (13-2-4) jumped out to leads after the first, second and third rounds after two different saves from Nguyen, before a pair of misses, one off the post and one high, sent the match into extra-kicks.
After the teams traded makes in the sixth, seventh and eighth rounds, sophomore Sophie Neves' attempt on frame down the middle was saved by Baylor's (12-3-4) Azul Alvarez.
Stepping to the spot, BUs backup goalkeeper Ashlee Zirkel, ripped a picture-perfect shot just over a diving Nguyen who guessed correctly, but couldn't save the attempt.
The attempt advanced fifth-seeded Baylor to meet the winner of Monday's second quarterfinal match between top-seeded TCU and eighth-seeded BYU.
Off to the dream start after a beautiful run and pass from Macy Blackburn found a streaking Courtwright, the Red Raiders took a 1-0 lead into the break.
The goal, her fourth, came off the 12th assist of the 2025 season for Blackburn. The helper tied the defender for the Red Raiders single-season season assist mark with Ali Murphy.
Courtwright's goal came after a crazy opening sequence where the Red Raiders nearly scored when a first minute cross deflected off a BU defender and through the hands of Alvarez before being cleared off the line by a Bear defender.
After the break, freshman Raleigh Greason nearly made it 2-0 Tech just 36 seconds into the second half, but her low shot was kick-saved by Alvarez. Â
In the middle of the 54th-minute, Baylor's Hannah Agustyn equaled the match when she buried a bouncing ball into the top portion of the net for her first goal of the season. The goal was made possible after a failed Tech clearance fell to Baylor's Aryanna Jiminson.
Jiminson ripped a low shot that was saved by Nguyen before the rebound was cleaned up by Agustyn far-post.
Just before the clock bled into the 80th minute, Tech nearly went back in front when a rising header from Skylar Haase found its way towards goal before being saved by Alvarez.Â
The chance was the final shot attempt of regulation by the Red Raiders.
In the first overtime period, both teams were forced to make just one save as neither side found the elusive golden-goal. Â
10 more minutes were placed on the clock between the first and second Overtime periods, as the Red Raiders and Bears continued to search for the aforementioned golden goal.
After neither side was able to really threaten in the final overtimes, the match went to PKs, marking the first match that went into PKs for Texas Tech since the 2023 Round of 32 win over Princeton.
The match, which will go down as a draw, extends the Red Raiders 16-match unbeaten streak (15-0-1) when following a loss or draw since 2023 and also marked the 19th time (every match) that the Red Raiders have outshot their opponent.
HEAD COACH TOM STONE:
"PKs are a hard way to win, but a brutal way to lose. It's hard to get through it and be the victor. It's pretty taxing knowing you tied the game against a team that we feel like over the course of two games we should have won both. But man Baylor doesn't go away, they played hard and scored a nice goal to give them some life. And there were times when they had us pinned. But we took turns knocking each other down. And in the end when it comes to PKs it's a coin flip. Faith did her job today, when you save two penalties you should win, but we went to eight or nine penalties which showed how good the teams were."
UP NEXT:
With their stay in the Big 12 Tournament over, the Red Raiders will turn their attention to the 2025 NCAA Soccer Selection one week from today (Nov. 10) when the entire field of 64 is announced via NCAA.com. The selection show will start at 3 p.m. (CT).
