Joey McGuire has agreed to a new contract extension after leading Texas Tech to an 11-1 record and top-five CFP ranking
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech announced Tuesday it has agreed to a significant long-term contract extension with Joey McGuire that will keep the fourth-year head coach in Lubbock through the 2032 season.
The new seven-year contract will significantly increase McGuire's annual compensation and provide opportunities for additional increases based on future conference and postseason success. The new contract will be finalized in the coming days.
"We believe the future of Texas Tech Football has never been brighter under Coach McGuire's leadership," Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "Our success this season is not a one-year plan. We fully intend to be an annual contender in the Big 12 Conference with our eyes on the College Football Playoff each and every season. We have the right leader in Coach McGuire to keep elevating this program, and this contract extension is a reflection of our investment in sustaining this success for years to come."
McGuire has elevated the Red Raiders into a national championship contender this season following a dominant 11-1 regular season that saw Texas Tech win all 11 games by at least 20 points. The Red Raiders enter their first appearance in the Edward Jones Big 12 Championship ranked in the top five nationally by the College Football Playoff selection committee.
The Red Raiders have been the winningest Big 12 programs under McGuire as Texas Tech has won 24 conference games in his four seasons, the most for any league school during that span. The Red Raiders are 34-17 overall under McGuire, which is the most wins by a Texas Tech head coach through 51 games since Jim Carlen had the same amount from 1970-73.
"I couldn't be more thankful for Kirby Hocutt and our administration for the belief in this football program," McGuire said. "I've said it countless times but my family and I love Lubbock, this university and this fan base. We expect to continue to elevate this program where appearances in the Big 12 title game, like this Saturday, and the College Football Playoff are expected on an annual basis."
Kickoff between Texas Tech and BYU is slated for 11 a.m. Saturday in the Edward Jones Big 12 Championship. Coverage from AT&T Stadium in Arlington will be provided on ABC and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
