Canady picks up her 600th career strikeout in pitchers duel
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 8 Texas Tech (6-2) fell to No. 1 Texas (8-0) on Friday night in nine innings by a score of 2-1. NiJaree Canady pitched the whole game, striking out 11 Longhorns and allowing just one earned run.
It was a classic pitchers duel all night as Texas's Teagan Kavan recorded 18 strikeouts through nine innings and also allowing just one earned run. Kavan finished with night with 147 pitches thrown while Canady had 151.
Tech struck first in the fourth inning after Logan Halleman singled and stole second base which set up Anya German for the RBI single two at-bats later. Tech's offense went cold after that as Kavan continued to deal on her home field.
Canady was just as impressive on the other end, recording timely outs, leaving six Longhorns stranded on base. Canady collected her 600th career strikeout as well and as this game marked the 27th time she has recorded 10 or more strikeouts in a game where she has pitched 5.0 or more innings.
The game ended on a chaotic play down the first base line that resulted in an error and Texas picking up the win.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will be back in action at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. tomorrow against UMass and Maryland, respectively. Â
