Tech drops game at UCF

ORLANDO – Two Lady Raiders recorded double-figure scoring, but Texas Tech fell to the UCF Knights on Saturday afternoon, 61-60, at the Addition Financial Arena.
For Tech (14-15, 3-13 Big 12), Shavers recorded her team-leading 25th double-figure scoring game of the year with 19 points, while making five or more 3-pointers in back-to-back games. Going 5-for-9 (.555) from beyond the arc, Shavers also totaled five rebounds and was perfect at the free throw line. In addition, she has now made a three in 11 consecutive games.
Against UCF (10-16, 3-13 Big 12), junior Bailey Maupin posted her 20th double-figure game this year with 10 points, going 3-for-3 at the line and leading the team with three assists. Junior Kilah Freelon had an impressive game – scoring six points on 75 percent shooting (3-for-4), while leading the team with nine rebounds. This was Freelon's ninth game of the season with five-plus rebounds in a game and 22nd in her career. Graduate Maya Peat tied her season-high in rebounds with six, four of those coming on the offensive side, and also had two assists.
Texas Tech got on the board first after Shavers made a 3-pointer at the beginning of the period. UCF cut into the lead with a couple of free throws before Freelon made a fastbreak layup for the 5-2 advantage. Before the media timeout, the Knights made one more free throw, then Shavers hit a mid-range jumper as Tech led 7-3 with 4:22 left. On the inbound play coming out of the timeout, Freelon made another jumper for six points in the quarter. UCF answered with a three to spark a 7-0 run to take the 12-11 lead. Shavers would retake the lead for the Lady Raiders with two free throws to end the period with the 13-12 advantage.
A minute into the following quarter, Maupin made a no-look pass under the basket to Sarengbe Sanogo, who closed it out with a layup. UCF scored the next three points before Jalynn Bristow nailed two free throws for the 17-15 lead. UCF responded with a 4-0 run to retake the lead at the media timeout. The Knights went on a 4-0 run before both teams were held scoreless for three minutes. UCF got a free throw before Loghan Johnson made a layup to make it 20-19 in UCF's favor at the half.
UCF opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to force a Texas Tech timeout as the Knights led by a 27-19 score. UCF made another layup before Denae Fritz scored one of her own, then forced a Knights turnover right after. Shavers used the momentum to nail a 3-pointer, then the Lady Raiders almost forced a five-second turnover on the inbound play to force a UCF timeout. The Knights were able to make a bucket out of the timeout, then Fritz responded with a triple for a 31-27 score. Both teams traded points, as Tech got baskets from Johnson and Jada Wynn, with 5:27 left. Then, Johnson converted a successful and-one play to cut the deficit to two points, 36-34. UCF went on a 5-0 run before Shavers made her third 3-pointer of the game. Almost two minutes later, UCF made a layup, then Maupin scored on a backdoor cut to the basket. At the buzzer, Peat pulled down an offensive board and put it back up to make it 43-41 in UCF's favor.
Maupin began the scoring in the fourth quarter with a perfect and-one play, giving Tech the lead at 44-43 after making her free throw. The Knights made a jumper a minute later to retake the lead, 47-44. Maupin nailed a three to tie the game at 47-all, then Johnson took a charge on the other end. Before the media timeout, UCF got a second-chance layup to pull ahead, 52-47. Shavers made it a one-point game after hitting a three with 3:50 left in the game. Maupin followed this up by making two free throws to give the Lady Raiders a 54-53 lead. The Knights went on a 6-0 run with 18 seconds left, then Shavers scored a three to make it 59-57 with 13.6 left. UCF made and missed a free throw with seven seconds left and only led by three points, holding on to that lead despite a buzzer-beating three from Fritz as UCF won it, 61-60.
