February 24, 2025 | Men's Basketball
LUBBOCK – No. 4 Houston held off No. 10 Texas Tech with a 69-61 win on Monday at United Supermarkets Arena to even the season series between the two teams after the Red Raiders had earned an 82-81 overtime win on February 1.
The Red Raiders (21-7, 12-5 Big 12) played without starters Chance McMillian and Darrion Williams who were both out with lower body injuries but were within three points in the final minute after a pair of free throws from Elijah Hawkins. The comeback attempt started with Kerwin Walton hitting two 3-pointers, his second cutting it to a 62-57 game with 1:46 on the clock. Hawkins then hit his free throws but Milos Uzan would hit a 3-pointer and two free throws to push Houston's lead back to eight with 24 seconds remaining. Tech fell to 14-3 at home with the loss and to 1-4 against ranked opponents this season. Houston (24-4, 16-1 Big 12) improved to 9-0 on the road and extended a seven-game winning streak.Â
"We didn't execute everything we wanted to do, the game plan was in the right place, but man did they fight and compete," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. "We turned the ball over in times when we had some opportunities but got to the free-throw line 26 times and put ourselves in a position to win a game. It wasn't good enough. I said that to the team in the locker room. This is not ok, but for the competitiveness and fight for the guys who played in this game. That's what it looks like. The result wasn't right but the competitiveness was. I'm hopeful we get another opportunity to play them."
JT Toppin recorded his 12th double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Hawkins finished the game with 14 points, five assists and only one turnover. Walton scored 12 points after going 4-for-11 on 3-pointers and Christian Anderson had 10 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Federiko Federiko provided nine rebounds and four points while Kevin Overton finished with seven points and four rebounds in a game where only six players played.
"There is a collective grit to this group now," McCasland said. "They're starting to sense what you have to do as a team."
Texas Tech finished the game shooting 17-for-57 (29.8 percent) from the field, 6-for-30 (20.0 percent) on 3-pointers and were 21-of-26 (80.8 percent) at the free-throw line. Tech had a 40-33 rebounding advantage over the Cougars, including a 17-7 advantage on offensive rebounds. Houston shot 22-for-49 from the field, made 6-of-12 from 3-point range and was 19-of-23 at the free-throw line.
Uzan led the Cougars with 22 points after shooting 8-for-15 from the field and 3-of-4 on 3-pointers. J'Wan Roberts added 16 points and seven rebounds in a game where he was 10-for-12 at the free-throw line.
Houston took a 33-30 lead into the halftime after the Red Raiders went just 3-for-15 on 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes. Hawkins led Tech with points nine after going 2-for-4 on 3s while Toppin had eight points and seven rebounds going into the break. Anderson added six and Walton had three. The Red Raiders were 9-of-9 at the free-throw line and had an 18-17 rebounding advantage. Houston was 12-for-28 from the field, 4-for-7 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 at the line. Anderson scored the first four Tech points with jumpers before a floater from Toppin tied the game at six. Hawkins gave Tech its first lead with a 3-pointer and another 3 from Walton put the Red Raiders up 19-16 at the under-12 media timeout. Houston went on a 6-0 run before another Toppin floater made it 23-21 in the first half that had eight lead changes.
The Red Raiders will now travel to play Kansas at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse before hosting Colorado on Wednesday, March 5 in their home finale.Â
