LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior wide receiver Coy Eakin has been awarded the No. 3 jersey, which is presented annually by head coach Joey McGuire to the Red Raider who best embodies the traits of "The Brand."
Eakin will be the offensive representative with the No. 3 jersey as senior inside linebacker Bryce Ramirez will continue to wear the number on the defensive side of the ball for a third-consecutive season. Ramirez has been presented the No. 3 jersey for three of McGuire's four seasons leading the Red Raiders as it is designated to the players who best represent Texas Tech's daily goal of being the "toughest, hardest-working, most-competitive team in the country." Â
"This was not a difficult decision in presenting Coy with our No. 3 jersey," McGuire said. "Coy has proven his toughness to this team over his time as a Red Raider and has developed into being one of our most-consistent players on the offensive side of the ball. He will be a great representative of that jersey number and what it means to this football program."
Eakin kicked off his fourth season as a Red Raider on Monday with the start of spring practices on the Texas Tech campus. He is coming off his best season as a Red Raider as he caught 49 passes for 652 yards and a team-leading seven touchdowns as only a sophomore this past season. He has 85 catches now for his Red Raider career, totaling 1,068 yards and nine touchdowns in 27 games.
Eakin finished as Texas Tech's third-leading receiver this past season, trailing only departed senior Josh Kelly and returning senior Caleb Douglas. Eakin will move to Kelly's previous spot in Texas Tech's inside receiver position beginning this spring under new offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich.
In addition to representing the standards of "The Brand," the No. 3 jersey is designated to honor the life of the late Luke Siegel, who passed in August 2021 after inspiring countless others across the nation with his fighting spirit in the wake of a golf-cart accident. The No. 3 represented Siegel's favorite number.
Texas Tech will practice three times this week to kick off spring drills as the Red Raiders will host afternoon workouts Monday and Wednesday and then again early Friday morning prior to Spring Break. The Red Raiders will resume their slate of 15-allocated practices March 25.
Below is a listing of players to have worn the No. 3 jersey in head coach Joey McGuire's tenure.
