New-look Red Raiders open fourth spring under McGuire

Texas Tech kicked off the first of 15 spring practices Monday with a two-hour workout
LUBBOCK, Texas – In January, head coach Joey McGuire officially kicked off his 31st year in the coaching profession. A December graduate at UT Arlington when he earned his kinesiology degree in 1995, McGuire went right to work as an assistant coach at Crowley High School, his alma mater.
As he detailed in his debut episode of the "What's Next! Podcast," last week, his start to the coaching profession had him serving as a special education teacher in addition to his role as an assistant coach. He was the young coach trying to learn, all the while helping his players.
For McGuire, the players are always the most-important aspect of every program.
That's why the start of year 31 is not only one he is excited about but one most Red Raiders are patiently awaiting after Texas Tech signed the nation's transfer class this winter. That class, along with a talented group of returners such as linebacker Jacob Rodriguez and wide receiver Caleb Douglas, among others, put on the Red Raider helmet for the first time this spring as Texas Tech kicked off its fourth season under McGuire.
"It was good," McGuire said following the Red Raiders' first practice. "We probably had eight football schools (walk-through periods), and I felt like we were in a good position as far as getting the offense and defense in. Of course, the first day you're really fired up and your anxiety goes up and you make a few mistakes that you're not used to making. It'll happen again Friday when we put the pads on. I thought the speed of practice was great, and guys got the call on both sides of the ball and played fast."
Texas Tech will practice again Wednesday afternoon before closing out its opening week of spring ball with an early wake-up call Friday morning. The Red Raiders will take Spring Break off and return their normal three practices per week schedule March 25.
